Valcourt, Quebec, Canada, June 9, 2022 – Can-Am is proud to announce that factory racers scored victories in both desert and short course racing over the weekend. Austin Weiland and his team put on a masterful performance to secure the win in the Pro UTV Forced Induction class and UTV Overall at the 54th SCORE Baja 500, while Nick Bruce would secured second in the Pro Stock UTV class. Kyle Chaney would go on to secure the win on Sunday at the first round of the Short Course Championship Off-Road Series in Antigo, WI.

“This was an incredible weekend for Can-Am Factory Racing Team, proving that we have one of the most powerful and versatile racing platforms in the Maverick X3,” said Jean-François Leclerc, Racing Manager at BRP. “We are really proud of the preparation, hard work and dedication displayed by Austin Weiland and Kyle Chaney, and the rest of the Can-Am Racers that worked their way on to the podium this weekend.”

The grueling 460.3-mile loop style course that started and ended in Ensenada, Baja, Mexico gave the racers a full tour of all the different terrain offered on the Baja peninsula and everything they could handle, living up to its legendary status as one of the most difficult places to race in the world.

Austin Weiland and his team started the race in 20th and would have to battle their way through traffic to get to clean air. At race mile 102, Weiland had skillfully navigated his Can-Am Maverick X3 into fourth place, methodically picking his way through the bottleneck on the course. Weiland and team would continue their charge to the front, battling back and forth for the lead between race mile 170 and 190 when they finally took over the physical lead. In true Baja fashion, the rugged terrain of the peninsula struck at race mile 214, when Weiland and team got a flat tire and fell back to third physically. After a quick tire change, Weiland set back out to recapture the lead, fighting their way back through the field and regaining the lead at race mile 240. At race mile 320, Weiland and the team were solidly in control of the race and handed the Maverick X3 to his teammate Dylan Schmoke, who brought the car across the line for the checkered flag back in Ensenada, clenching the victory.

“Our Can-Am Maverick X3 was absolutely perfect today. Its unrivaled handling allowed us to navigate through the field quickly and get out front,” said Austin Weiland of Can-Am Factory Racing. “We are really lucky to be supported by a brand like Can-Am, they are so dedicated to relentless pursuit of winning performance, which helps push our whole team forward.”

Can-Am announce that factory racers scored victories

The first round of the Short Course Championship Off-Road series kicked off in Wisconsin at Antigo Lions Roaring Raceway, where Can-Am Factory racer, Kyle Chaney, took the win in the Pro Turbo SxS class against a stacked field in Maverick X3.

Starting in second, Chaney made quick work of the field and found his way to the lead through the first turn and never looked back, bringing home the win by driving a smart and smooth race on the rough and challenging racetrack.

“This track was really rough, but my Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS performed flawlessly, so all I had to do was drive smart and be smooth,” said Kyle Chaney of Can-Am Factory Racing.

Valcourt, Quebec, January 14, 2020 – Can-Am factory racer Phil Blurton won the 2020 Best In The Desert (BITD) UTV Turbo class opener in Parker, Ariz., Blurton, a two-time BITD Turbo class champion, kicked off the season with a convincing win behind the wheel of his No Limit RD-prepped turbocharged Can-Am Maverick X3 side-by-side. Can-Am racer Austin Weiland joined Blurton on the podium to give Can-Am a 1-2 finish to start the year. Can-Am also won the UTV Unlimited (Michael Isom) and UTV Production Turbo Short Course (Beau Judge) events.

Blurton came into the new racing season more determined than ever. One reason is the Californian wanted to make amends for the DNF he suffered to end the season last year, which ended his chase for three straight championships. Another was that the Parker 250 course has never been too kind to him, so a victory was his objective. With a total three-lap time of 04:34:52.895, Blurton won the 2020 BITD opener, setting his 2020 plan into motion.

“We made it, finally. This track has haunted us the last two years,” said Blurton on the BITD podium. “The last race of last-season was pretty much a worse-case scenario. But it made us come back hungrier here and try to go for the triple crown. Hopefully we can get this championship. We’re off to a good start.”

Can-Am driver Austin Weiland, who ended 2019 in fifth place overall, secured the runner-up spot about a minute back of Blurton in his own Maverick X3. His podium run gave Can-Am a solid 1-2 finish in the UTV Turbo class. Derek and Jason Murray had a great race going and even carried the lead into lap three. However, a mechanical issue forced them to go at a slower pace on the final lap and they had to settle for fifth place.

Mobbin’ Racing Can-Am Maverick X3 pilot Michael Isom won his first event in 2020 to start the defense of his 2019 UTV Unlimited class championship. Can-Am racers actually took the top seven spots in the UTV Unlimited ranks and the also the runner-up finish in the UTV Rally class. No Limit Rd Can-Am racer Beau Judge, who is the co-pilot for Blurton in UTV Turbo class, began the weekend winning the UTV Production Turbo Short Course class by more than three minutes Friday evening.

The next BITD action for Can-Am racers is the two-day Laughlin Desert Classic, held Feb. 20-23, in Laughlin, Nev.

VALCOURT, QUEBEC, CANADA, Monday, May 6, 2019 – Can-Am continues its impressive performance during Best In The Desert (BITD) racing, capturing two class overall victories at the VT Construction Silver State 300 in Alamo, Nev. Maverick X3 Turbo R side-by-side pilot Phil Blurton won the UTV Pro Turbo class and was joined on the podium by third-place finisher and Can-Am teammate Dustin Jones. Can-Am Maverick X3 racers also took home a podium sweep in the UTV Unlimited class, won by Michael Isom. In Grand National Cross Country ATV racing action, Landon Wolfe remained undefeated on his Renegade X xc 1000R in 2019 by winning the X-Factor Whitetails event in Indiana.

Blurton Wins Silver State 300
Reigning BITD UTV Pro Turbo Class Champions Blurton and co-pilot Beau Judge have maintained their consistency this racing season and were amongst the leaders in the chase for the 2019 title. However, this dynamic duo had never won the Silver State 300 event. Well, that is until this past weekend, when they guided their No. 944 Can-Am XPS No Limit RD Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R side-by-side vehicle to the UTV Turbo class win. The victory was big for a few reasons. First, it erased any doubt that they couldn’t find the top stair of the podium at this event. Second, it proved they could outrun their competitors as they won by almost 9 minutes and were one of only two race teams in the class to finish in less than six hours. And finally, the big win let them walk away with the class points lead heading into the Vegas-To-Reno event.

Maverick X3 Racers win BITD Silver State

“We finally got the Silver State win,” stated Blurton, who had finished runner-up the previous two seasons. “We have worked hard for this one. Our No Limit RD-prepped Can-Am Maverick X3 continues to outpace the competition. It feels good to pull it off, because it means a great starting spot for the Vegas-To-Reno race.”

Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R racer Dustin Jones and co-pilot Dustin Henderson fought hard in the Nevada desert, erasing 20 spots on their way to a third-place podium finish in the UTV Pro Turbo class at the SS300. The strong finish also gives the S3 Racing tandem a better standing in the championship points and a better start for the August round in Vegas. Can-Am Maverick X3 racers also captured sixth (Dan Fisher) and ninth (Derek and Jason Murray) in the UTV Pro Turbo class to give Can-Am four top-10 finishers.

Racer Michael Isom and James Konces (Mobbin’ Racing No Limit RD Can-Am) won the UTV Unlimited class. Texan Josh Shelton took the runner-up spot behind Isom, while Minnesotan Craig Johnson rounded out the all-Maverick X3 podium in third place.

“We had a blast battling in the blinding dust,” stated Isom, who finished 50th overall amongst all 170 cars, trucks and UTVs (70+) entered. “Our Can-Am was fast and on point. A huge thanks goes to our trusted pit crew and sponsors.”

GNCC ATV Racing – X Factor Whitetails
Can-Am Renegade X xc 1000R racer Landon Wolfe notched another victory in his GNCC 4×4 Pro class career, by winning round five of the series held in Peru, Ind. Wolfe is a perfect 5-for-5 this season after finishing runner-up a year ago. He now has eight wins in his last 10 races aboard the Can-Am ATV. Can-Am also won five other classes at the X-Factor Whitetails GNCC event, proving, once again, it’s the 4×4 brand of choice for competitive woods racing.

Can-Am pilot, Chad Hughes, passed more than 60 other vehicles on his way to a finishing the 2019 Can-Am UTV King of the Hammers race. While his 21stplace finish may not sound spectacular on paper, you must remember finishing the race in the allotted 9-hour time limit is often viewed a significant accomplishment. Finishing the challenging course, while passing roughly half the field along the way, is statement maker, especially when you add to that his Can-Am Maverick Sport X rc 1000R was nearly stock in a field full of high-horsepower, turbocharged side-by-side vehicles with long travel suspensions. While he didn’t win the race, he did showcase to the spectators, fellow racers, course officials and even the winch-assist vehicle operator, that his Maverick Sport rock crawler is the real deal.

“I was of course very proud to be representing Can-Am in an all-new machine targeted specifically for rock crawling,” stated Hughes, who started racing side-by-side vehicles in 2011. “The car did not disappoint, it absolutely rules the rocks. As expected, it gives up quite a bit of ground to the Maverick X3 vehicles in the desert, but we started 84th and eventually passed 63 cars to end up 21st as we crossed the finish line in 7:33. That was well under the nine hours allotted finish time.”

Hughes, 54, resides in St. George, Utah, where he works at Moto Zoo Powersports and also runs his own adventure and fabrication shop called Offroad 365, the latter of which is a name fitting of his lifestyle. Hughes, who also is the local high school’s mountain bike racing team coach, said he was disappointed when he learned a technical, rock-wall climb, he felt confident in scaling with the Maverick Sport X rc, was removed from qualifying. And the new qualifying run setup was more of a short-course, desert loop that favored all-out speed. Despite the challenging starting spot, Hughes knew he would have to shine in the rocks to gain ground, while also holding his own in the desert sections.

“As soon as we hit the first [rock] canyon, we started passing cars like crazy…eight cars here, six cars there, and it went on and on,” said Hughes, who’s off-road resume includes motocross and mountain biking, among other activities. “And we managed to hit 78mph on the lake beds running 33-inch tires.”

Hughes said the Maverick Sport X rc 1000R side-by-side vehicle had zero mechanical issues during the race and only took some minimal damage to the bottom skid plate and perhaps a small scratch to the side. “Don’t blame me or the X rc, blame the rocks,” he said.

One of the most impressive capability statements about the Maverick Sport X rc for Hughes was that he didn’t require the use of his onboard winch the entire KOH race. “The only time we used our winch was when my co-pilot Tracon Kirk got out of the Can-Am to help move a stuck competitor out of the way who was blocking the trail,” he explained. “True story, just ask the guys running the JEEP winch on Outer Limits who watched us and later said to us ‘Damn, that things works pretty good’.”

Making it ULTRA4 and KOH-ready

After the race, Hughes shared with us that his Can-Am was nearly 90 percent stock and that he just fabricated and installed a few accessories and those mandated by Ultra4 Racing. His modifications list is not a lengthy one like you’d read on many of the other vehicles competing in the Can-Am UTV King of the Hammer racing event. Hughes, who has a history with customization having built one-off rock buggies and JEEPs, swapped the stock Maverick X rc ROPS for a 6-point DOM safety cage with a nearly 2-inch diameter, added the necessary harness system, safety nets, fire extinguishers, flashing race light and, of course, the mandatory properly placed race numbers. To customize the Can-Am Maverick Sport X rc to his liking for the KOH rocks, Hughes went with an STI tire-and-wheel kit. The 3-in. larger tires and offset wheels added a little more ride height, clearance and width.

“The car passed tech with flying colors,” he stated. “Our only re-work was to make the roof numbers larger. Everything else was stock. We ran a stock drivetrain, stock suspension, stock brakes, stock steering, stock A-arms and all! It’s almost unbelievable really, but I’m super impressed with the little car and, to me, it’s mission accomplished for Can-Am.”

HUGHES – No. 1295 Moto United Can-Am Maverick Sport X rc

6-point DOM safety cage 1.75-in. diameter tubing

3″ 5-point harnesses meeting the necessary safety spec

Custom slotted bottom seat cushions for harness pass-throughs

Window safety nets (doubled as secondary door latches)

Fire extinguishers

GPS

Can-Am OEM HD HMW skid plates

STI 33-in.

Kennesaw, Ga. – February 13, 2018 – Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, announces Yamaha factory-supported and bLU cRU racer CJ Greaves, along with his father, veteran off-road racer Johnny Greaves, and Kyle Anderson were among the few competitors who completed the grueling King of the Hammers (KOH) UTV Race on Wednesday, piloting Yamaha’s pure sport YXZ1000R side-by-side (SxS) before time expired. As the top finishing YXZ1000R driver with a solid 5th overall, CJ Greaves was awarded $5,000 for the Yamaha bLU cRU racing bonus.

The KOH UTV race, held annually in Johnson Valley, California, is known to be among the toughest one-day off-road races in the world, this year with only 12 UTV racers finishing out of the starting 115. It is the largest off-road racing event in North America in terms of both competitors and spectators, combining intense desert racing and daunting rock crawling.

“The sheer attrition alone witnessed at King of the Hammers is a true testament to Yamaha’s Proven Off-Road performance – of the eight Yamahas in a field of 115 UTV entries, the YXZs still made up a quarter of those who actually finished,” said Donnie Luce, Yamaha’s off-road racing coordinator. “Furthermore, qualifying first and second, successfully completing the course, and securing the bLU cRU bonus – all in their first year at KOH – is evidence of the Greaves’ incredible talent as drivers, as well as the YXZ’s versatility, capability, and durability when pitted against the toughest terrain in racing.”

Although this was the first year the Wisconsin natives raced KOH, both CJ and Johnny Greaves are veteran off-road racers known for their short-course dominance in The Off-Road Championship (TORC) Series in the Pro 2 and Pro 4 truck classes. CJ is also the defending champion of the TORC Series Pro Stock UTV class, entering his second year as a Yamaha factory-supported racer aboard his Monster Energy Mutant Super Soda / Maxxis / Greaves Motorsports YXZ1000R.

Rounding out the top-ten, Kyle Anderson and his Weller Racing YXZ1000R finished a respectful 9th-place overall. In addition to Anderson and the GYTR turbo-equipped Greaves duo, this year’s UTV race featured an equally impressive lineup of veteran off-road racers piloting the Yamaha YXZ1000R, including last year’s top-finishing KOH YXZ1000R racer, Jason Weller, and Lucas Oil Regional Off-Road Racing Champion, Dustin Nelson.

The Yamaha YXZ1000R is the world’s only pure-sport SxS, providing unmatched direct-connection between driver and machine. Powered by an industry-first three-cylinder 998cc engine and five-speed manual transmission, the versatile YXZ1000R offers superior off-road capability, comfort and confidence in even the most difficult of terrain, including open desert, woods, and advanced rock crawling environments.

Every Yamaha SxS is proudly built at Yamaha’s state-of-the-art U.S. factory in Newnan, Georgia, for worldwide distribution.

Minneapolis (February 8, 2018) – Polaris Factory Racing continued its electric start to the 2018 season with a podium sweep at the Can-Am King of the Hammers UTV Race, the world’s toughest one-day off-road race.

Following Ronnie Anderson’s win last week at WORCS season opener in the all-new RZR® RS1, Mitch Guthrie Jr.’s victory kept the Polaris Factory Racing team atop the podium. Guthrie Jr. was joined by fellow Polaris teammate Branden Sims in second and his father, Mitch Guthrie Sr., taking third. With multiple victories already secured early in this season, the Polaris team is primed to build upon its incredibly successful 2017 season.

From an early age, Mitch Guthrie Jr. has pursued his father’s pedigree of racing success and excellence – as Mitch Guthrie Sr. is a six-time King of the Hammers UTV champion and UTV racing legend. Despite having won multiple marquee races in his young career, including the Mint 400, UTV World Championships and Baja 1000, the coveted King of the Hammers title has eluded Guthrie Jr. until now. With his incredible victory at this year’s King of the Hammers event, it appears that a changing of the guard is in order from father to son.

“It’s been a long road getting here with countless hours spent practicing and even participating in this race with my dad a few times. To finally not just be in the race, but to walk away a champion is a huge honor for me and an experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” said Mitch Guthrie Jr. “My dad is my biggest inspiration and my toughest competition. We had a good plan coming in to run a smooth course, and the Polaris RZR was awesome and allowed us to come out on top.”

“We want to congratulate our entire team for their performance at this week’s event. To come back to King of the Hammers and sweep the podium for the second consecutive year is truly a testament to not just the Polaris RZR, but to each of the drivers on our team,” said Matt Boone, RZR and Marketing Director at Polaris. “We are thrilled for Mitch Jr. on his first career victory at King of the Hammers. We know what this race means to him and his family with his dad winning here so many times before.”

Yesterday’s victory continues the Polaris Factory Racing team’s dynamic start to the season that already includes victories at the Desert and Short Courses at the GMZ UTV Winter Nationals Casey Folks Parker 250, and the WORCS season opener at Orleans Arena last weekend in Las Vegas. These victories combined with an additional 43 wins and 129 podiums within the last two years, showcase how the Polaris Factory Racing team continues to outperform the competition in desert racing.

The Polaris Factory team will look to continue its success when it returns to competition on February 23 with Round 2 of the WORCS series at Canyon Motocross in Peoria, Arizona.

Minneapolis, MN (January 8, 2018) – It would seemingly be difficult to eclipse the 22-wins Polaris RZR® FACTORY RACING generated in its dominating 2017 season. But with Brandon Schueler’s, Jagged X Racing, victory at this weekend’s GMZ UTV Winter Nationals Casey Folks Parker 250, it appears that recreational side-by-side category creator and leader is setting out to do just that. Along with Brandon’s win in the turbo class, Polaris RZR FACTORY RACING picked up two more wins within the production desert and short course classes.

In the first Best in the Desert (BITD) race of the year, Brandon Schueler looked to continue his momentum, coming off two straight wins at the Baja 1000 and the Pahrump Nugget 250. Armed with a new paint job and fuel from the win streak, Brandon led the field, finishing in first place.

“It was awesome to ring in the New Year with a first-place finish! With the Parker 250 win, that makes it three in a row right now and we can’t be happier,” said Brandon Schueler of Jagged X Racing.

With 43 wins and 129 podiums within the last two years, RZR FACTORY RACING continues to outperform the competition in desert racing. Last season alone, RZR racers took four of six championships between SCORE and BITD, claiming two wins at the Mint 400, a podium sweep and two wins at the Baja 500, and finished the season strong with three wins at the Pahrump Nugget 250. Highlighting an epic year, Brandon Schueler and Team Jagged X Racing also clenched the win at the 50th running of the SCORE Baja 1000.

“Backed by an enormous level of momentum after the incredibly successful 2017 season, Team RZR is back and ready to dominate the desert once again,” said Matt Boone, marketing director at Polaris. “We are confident 2018 will prove to be another milestone year for Polaris RZR, the largest factory-backed program in all of off-road racing.”

Looking ahead to 2018, Polaris RZR’s competitive presence will be bigger and better than ever with new roster additions, making it the largest racing team in the industry. Team RZR is determined to reclaim the BITD Turbo championship as well as successfully defend as many of its 62 2017 podiums as possible.

This past weekend’s BITD race took place in Parker, Arizona Jan. 5 and 6, officially kicking off the 2018 desert racing season.

Valcourt, Québec, Dec. 4, 2017 – Phil Blurton piloted his Can-Am / No Limit RD Maverick X3 Turbo R side-by-side vehicle to the UTV Pro Production Turbo class championship this past weekend at the Best In The Desert Pahrump Nugget 250 in Nevada. It was the first BITD championship for both Blurton and factory Can-Am and the third major championship won by a racer of a Maverick X3 Turbo R vehicle in 2017.

“This was a historic and game-changing championship for both Can-Am and for driver Phil Blurton,” stated Jeff Leclerc, Team Leader, Can-Am race department. “Not only did he accomplish the difficult task of earning the coveted BITD UTV title in his rookie season, but he also earned Can-Am its first ever Best In The Desert championship. We have established great momentum this year with our Can-Am Maverick X3 platform, having won at least three off-road championships, and don’t plan to lift our foot off the pedal.”

With a solid fourth-place finish at the Pahrump Nugget 250, Blurton and co-pilot Beau Judge, secured the 2017 BITD UTV Pro Production championship with their No. 944 No Limit RD-prepped Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R vehicle. Blurton, who earlier this season posted back-to-back wins at the prestigious UTV World Championship and the Vegas-to-Reno rounds, carried a 16-point advantage heading into the final round of the season. The team’s top-five finishing time of 05:03:33.408 gave them a nice 7-point cushion after the final round and their first BITD championship.
