It’s a question we get asked all the time, almost as often as we’re asked how people can get a job like ours. While publishing a UTV magazine may seem glamorous and such, it’s a lot of hard work testing, evaluating, photographing and writing about various machines. No the question we get hit with a lot goes like this, “So Mario, which UTV is the best?” Most people generally don’t like my answer, as I replay that it truly depends on what they want the machine to do, and how they intend to make it do it.

There is simply no single best UTV out there. I’m not trying to dodge the question in any way, or downplay anyone’s personal brand preferences, which play a lot into what machines people think are the best. It did, however, really get me to thinking about a list of say, the five best UTVs available at the moment I write this. That I can do. Here are the five best UTVs available right now in no particular order, and what about them puts them on this list.

YAMAHA WOLVERINE X2 R-SPEC

With the introduction of the X4, it was only a matter of months before Yamaha unleashed the revised two-passenger version of the popular Wolverine. The X2 shares the engine and basic chassis of the X4. You get the same ultra-reliable transmission and 847cc parallel twin, fuel injected engine. The rear cargo area is now a full dumping cargo box, giving you more options when it comes time to use the Wolverine for chores. But the great outdoors and adventure is more to the X2’s liking, and it comes pre-wired for Yamaha’s new Adventure Pro GPS system. Like the previous model Wolverine’s the R-SPEC adds piggyback KYB shocks at all four corners. These shocks give a plusher ride and are better equipped for serious adventuring. The R-SPEC models get sun tops and aluminum wheels.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

The Wolverine X2 is a seriously good handling machine with an engine that operates so quietly, you’ll question whether it is really running at times. There are a few key areas that Yamaha rules the industry with. They have the best CVT transmission going, with tremendous belt life. The system shifts smoothly, never fails and you’d honestly have to try very hard to damage it. Yamaha was the first out with power steering, and that is evident with the handling of the X2. This is one of the best-handling adventure machines on the market. It’s not a pure sport machine, but Yamaha isn’t going after the RZR crowd with the Wolverine. If your idea of fun is getting back into country that is difficult to reach, or clawing your way up to the top of a nasty, rutted, wooded hillside, the Wolverine is calling your name.

Yamaha is a firm believer that their products produce the power you can use as opposed to the power you think you need. This is very evident with the X2’s engine. While some bemoan the engine’s power output and tout horsepower figures published by other brands, Yamaha likes to tell people to get behind the wheel and use the machine in the environment it was meant for and then see if the power output works. We can say with certainty that the Yamaha Wolverine X2 has plenty of power for doing what it was intended for and you’ll be totally happy with it. Combine the aspects of power, superb handling and amazing reliability, and you can see how the X2 makes this list with ease.

TEXTRON WILDCAT XX

When a bunch of UTV magazine editors get together for an event, a lot of bench racing and story swapping takes place, often over a round or three of adult beverages. One of the topics that has come up recently revolved around the sport class of UTVs and where were see things shaping up. More than one editor stated that if he were to go out and buy a new pure-sport UTV, he’d pick the Textron Off-Road Wildcat XX hands down. That says something about this machine for sure.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

The XX is one of those machines we weren’t sure we’d actually see hit production. We all knew it was in the works before the merging of Textron and Arctic Cat. We also knew that Textron was working on an extreme performance machine of their own. Luckily those two machines were merged as well and we got the XX. It is a very good, well-thought out machine, too. It is powered by a 998cc inline three-cylinder, four-stroke, naturally-aspirated motor that is very familiar to anyone who has driven a Yamaha YXZ. The motor is also used in Arctic Cat snowmobiles through a partnership with Yamaha. In the XX form, it produces 125 horsepower and feeds a CVT transmission with a TEAM Industries clutch and closed-loop electronic fuel injection. Is there a turbo option coming? Have we even spotted one somewhere? Maybe.

Through a partnership with Robby Gordon, the Wildcat XX features a trophy-truck inspired suspension system utilizing front A-Arms with unequal length top to bottom. The rear system uses a trailing arm setup that is directly inspired by the leading off-road racers. This combination reduces changes in the track width by up to 40-percent in the front and an astounding 80-percent in the rear when compared to what the competition is currently doing. This gives the XX unmatched stability and control, which we experienced firsthand. The shocks are FOX 2.5 Podium QS3 Shocks with Bottom-Out Control. These are an excellent choice for this machine with a solid feel throughout the full 18-inches of front and rear travel. We hammered it through some of the most serious whoops we’ve ever driven through and the action is as good as we’ve experienced. This is one of those machines that the harder you drive it, the more fun it is. That is more than enough reason to get this machine on our list of best UTVs.

CAN-AM MAVERICK SPORT 1000R

Can-Am has been working hard to impress the UTV world with some great new models. They turned the industry on its ear with the X3 lineup and the recent overhaul of the Maverick line with the Trail and the new Maverick Sport keeps things interesting for sure. The 100-horsepower Maverick Sport 1000R is about as much fun on the trails as you can have. It combines crisp power delivery with a comfortable cockpit and amazing suspension action into a machine that you’re going to want to have in your garage, if only long enough to gas up so you can go at it again.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

As you would expect from a Can-Am, the Sport is powered by a 976cc Rotax V-Twin engine. The 1000R produces an intense 100hp. It borrows from the X3 brother with large air intakes, oversized radiators and an oversized Donaldson airbox from the Maverick X3. It also gets a boost from a specialized high-performance exhaust line and muffler, an additional CVT intake and the same CVT driven pulley from the Maverick X3. It will get up and move with ease, pushing you back into your seat should you really stomp on it, and who wouldn’t want to do that?

The Maverick Sport uses double A-Arm front suspension and Torsional Trailing Arm (TTA) rear suspension. FOX 2.0 Podium shocks provide the shock duties with the front having 11.5-inches of travel and the rear shocks offering 12-inches of travel. Like we saw with last year’s Maverick Trail, the Sport geometry positions the shocks at the outermost corners of the machine. This design gives the chassis more stability and improves handling by reducing the load on the sway bars that are built into the front and rear systems. Add this to the longer 90.6-inch wheelbase of the Sport and you’ve got a great handling suspension system. One fact we really like about this machine is how well it tracks in rough terrain. While some machines in this class will start swapping at the rear end, the Sport doesn’t. It manages to stay straighter long and with less driver input, letting you focus on the trail ahead a little more. There is a lot less pucker-factor when getting on the gas in harsh terrain. Dual sway bars help a lot, too. Combine this excellent power output, with great handling and suspension, as well as the comfortable Ergo-Lok cockpit, and you’ll see why we added the Maverick Sport 1000R to this list.

POLARIS RANGER XP 1000 CREW

Polaris has been doing it right for a long time, and the newly redesigned Ranger XP 1000 Crew is no exception. Last year when they released the completely redesigned XP 1000 with over 100 consumer suggested improvements and refinements, we hoped they would pass those along to the Crew machine. They didn’t disappoint us. Polaris redesigned the Crew from the frame up to be the class-leading, six passenger utility/recreation machine.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

They started with a single-spar, one-piece mainframe that adds rigidity and capability to the machine. This bumped the towing capacity up to 2,500 pounds and overall payload capacity up to 1,750 pounds. You can tow more and carry more without overtaxing the machine. There is 11-inches of wheel travel at all four corners and 13-inches of ground clearance thanks to the revised suspension and the new 27-inch tires from Maxxis. They completely redesigned the looks of the machine to match the three-seat version, and most are either drawn to the sleeker appearance, or they hate it. We happen to like it. Polaris also redid the entire interior with thicker, plusher seating, a revised dash and driver-focused controls. There is an increase in interior storage and adding accessories is now easier than ever thanks to a redesigned electrical system that allows for essentially plug-and-play use. Installing a winch now takes 30 minutes as opposed to several hours.

The engine is a 999cc ProStar twin-cylinder, four-stroke that produces a rated 82 horsepower. Polaris took what was already the benchmark for a quiet running machine and made it smoother. You really notice it in the longer Crew version, too. This is a very capable machine for work and play, with strong trail manners and serious utility grunt for getting things done. It is a favorite of ours and an easy pick for this list.

CFMOTO ZFORCE 1000 EPS LX

Some people are shocked by the amount of nice things we have to say about the CFMOTO machines. They like to imply that it is driven by advertising dollars over credibility. We get it. There is always going to be that cloud hanging out there of questionable journalistic integrity. Let’s go ahead and clear the air right now – We would never allow advertising to dictate what we say about a machine or product. There are two factors that get the CFMOTO ZFORCE 1000 on this list, and two factors alone. It is a quality machine that we have enjoyed driving a lot, and it is a machine that is selling very well throughout Canada. We’re pretty confident that sales will increase in the U.S., too as the CFMOTO dealer base in that country grows.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

The CFMOTO ZFORCE 1000 EPS LX is powered by a 962.6cc V-twin, eight-valve, liquid-cooled, four-stroke motor with a 91x74mm bore and stroke and a 10.6:1 compression ratio. It has a a Bosch electronic fuel injection system and ignition. The CFMOTO motor is very torquey and fun to drive, producing 60.5 ft/lbs of torque at 6,200 rpm. It’s especially noticeable when you’re in some tighter terrain and you chop on the throttle. Horsepower is rated at 80hp. It’s not tops in the 60-inch class, but its close and it’s a fun machine to drive. We’re all about having fun.

Suspension wise, the CFMOTO has dual wishbone setups front and back with gas-charged shocks that have independent rebound and compression adjustments. The front has 283mm of travel and the rear has 280mm. It’s not the smoothest in the class, but it’s not the worst by a long shot. CFMOTO adds stainless steel bumpers and exhaust. CFMOTO adds mirrors, turn signals and a horn, as well as a 3,000-pound rated winch to the front of the ZFORCE. It is nice to see these accessories come as standard equipment, as they are things they often get added at additional cost at the dealership. Competitive pricing, strong sales and a commitment to the market, along with being a fun machine to drive, make this machine an easy pick for our list. Drive one yourself and you’ll see why.

AUGUSTA, GA — Textron Off Road continues to innovate its off-road vehicle lineup with the introduction of the all-new, pure-utility 2019 Textron Off Road Prowler Pro and Prowler Pro XT. Built in Thief River Falls, Minn. by the company known for precision engineering that fuels adventurers and hard workers all over the world, both models deliver quiet gas power and unmatched reliability for tackling the toughest jobs and handling the most-extreme hunts.

“Textron Off Road focused on the driver experience when developing the new Prowler Pro,” said John Collins, Vice President, Consumer for Textron Specialized Vehicles. “The legacy of Textron, a leader in design and production of combat vehicles, military helicopters and advanced marine craft trusted to keep our warfighters safe, has been built into this vehicle making it a formidable work partner.”

Whether its traversing farm fields, tending to livestock or pacing the thrill of the hunt, farmers and hunters appreciate a quiet vehicle. At the heart of the Prowler Pro is a 50-horsepower, whisper-quiet, 812cc EFI engine offering all the grunt needed to be a reliable work partner or haul big game. To complement the strong, silent engine, vibration-reducing engine mounts to minimize buzzing and harshness so the vehicle offers quiet power and performance. Prowler Pro also features a tuned exhaust utilizing a rubber isolator with the muffler to lessen exhaust noise.

2019 Textron Off Road Prowler Pro

Drive-by-wire throttle technology is matched by a carefully calibrated CVT drive system to provide ultra-smooth acceleration and off-gas deceleration. The drive-by-wire system is even programmed to compensate for unintended “foot bounce” on the gas pedal to maintain smooth power delivery when riding over rough terrain.

Prowler Pro offers a quiet ride experience and the comfort needed for tough tasks and long days. For a comfortable ride, the vehicle has 10 inches of front and 9.5 inches of rear suspension travel with 10.75 inches of ground clearance. The 26-inch Pro Terrain tires tackle rutted farm fields and the toughest hunting trails. Its 2,000-pound towing capacity, 1,500-pound payload and 1,000-pound cargo box capacity allow implements and game to be towed or hauled with ease. For in-cab comfort, the vehicle features a three-person bench seat perfect for work applications, and tilt steering with a column shifter for easy and comfortable operation. Its customizable speed control allows the operator to easily set a maximum speed between 25-50 mph (in 1-km increments) to ensure that ranch and farm hands are utilizing appropriate speed on the job.

Whether hunting or farming, storage is essential, and Prowler Pro offers 17.95 cubic-feet of overall storage capacity. The vehicle also has a cargo box with 14.72 cubic-feet to haul plenty of gear or game. Its modular in-cab design allows for the removal of the passenger seats – which can be easily stored behind the driver’s seat – to free up additional storage space for oversized items. The behind-the-seat storage offers easily-accessible space for quickly needed gear, while smaller items such as gloves, tools and safety goggles can be stored in the spacious glove box.

Reliability and serviceability are essential in the field or on the hunt, and Prowler Pro was developed to be a durable and easy-to-maintain work partner. Textron Off Road aggressively tested Prowler Pro for more than 1,000 hours to put the vehicle through its paces. The result is a tried-and-true work side-by-side that’s durable enough to withstand the harshest tasks and conditions. For ease-of-maintenance, the Prowler Pro has toolless service components with easy-access panels, so the vehicle can spend more time in the field or at hunt camp. For maximum versatility, Textron Off Road offers more than 50 custom-built, easily installed accessories including a truck-inspired cab, a heater kit, body protection, plows, gun scabbards and lighting. Accessory packages include “Geared-Up,” “Expedition” and “Decked-Out” which offer different roof, windshield, protection, lighting, and in-cab accessory options.

AUGUSTA, GA — Textron Specialized Vehicles Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, and its Textron Off Road brand have off-roaders’ hearts racing with the much-anticipated Wildcat XX, a new high-performance side-by-side designed to deliver an unbeatable ride experience.

Designed in collaboration with off-road racing legend Robby Gordon, the Wildcat XX is built for a superior ride in every aspect. The off-road racing-inspired suspension system delivers best-in-class handling with more than 18 inches of travel in the front and rear. The FOX 2.5 PODIUM QS3 Shocks with Bottom-Out Control are precision-tuned at the factory with the flexibility to absorb and smooth out the most challenging rides. An all-new TEAM front gear case and rear transaxle provide 2WD/4WD and 4WD lock functionality for rock-crawling capability and exceptional flexibility in different terrains. Making it all go is a 125HP, 998cc three-cylinder EFI engine—the highest horsepower aspirated engine in its class.

2018 Textron Off Road Wildcat XX

“Wildcat XX was inspired by the most extreme off-road racing vehicles, and is built to outperform the biggest side-by-side names in off-roading,” said John Collins, Vice President, Consumer for Textron Specialized Vehicles. “We like to say that Wildcat XX puts ride over everything. With Wildcat XX, you get an unbeatable ride and ultimately, a side-by-side that will conquer any rock, rut or ravine.”

2018 Textron Off Road Wildcat XX

The Wildcat XX front suspension features unequal-length A-arms that angle the tire into every turn, grabbing more of the ground to better negotiate even the toughest hairpin turns. Backing it up is a rear trailing arm that might look familiar to hardcore truck and class one buggy racers, who provided the inspiration to link the arm to the front, but not the sides. This keeps the wheels moving up and down—not side to side as with competitive vehicles. The side to side motion—called track width change—pushes other machines off course, requiring constant steering corrections and reducing stability. The Wildcat XX trailing arm results in 80 percent less track width change in the rear for a smoother ride.

2018 Textron Off Road Wildcat XX

To further enhance the owner experience, Textron Specialized Vehicles designed the Wildcat XX with durability and serviceability at the forefront. With a race-inspired cage and tough components like double-shear joints, a forged aluminum front knuckle and HSLA tubing throughout, Wildcat XX is built to take the most extreme punishment. In addition, the engine is top-mounted to avoid taking a beating during bottom outs. When service is required, the Wildcat XX front steel clip and rear bottom skid are easily removable, and the cargo box is removable without any tools required. So, you get easy access to the powertrain, transaxle, engine and front gear case.

Wildcat XX offers a driver-first design for the ultimate in comfort and convenience. Key features include the largest cab in the industry, ergonomic seating and an automotive style interior.

The all-new 2018 Textron Off Road Havoc X is a high-performance side-by-side exing a hardcore work ethic and hair-raising wild streak. An all-conquering crossover, it blends class-leading suspension and ground clearance with enormous payload and towing capacities, all reinforced by the smile-inducing glory of 100-horsepower and 67-ft.- lbs. of torque.

In Short: a Havoc side-by-side will conquer the backcountry as comfortably as it will handle the back forty. It will tame the trails and transport trophy game.

This machine bullies its way to the top of the crossover category with a class-leading double- A-arm suspension package delivering 12.8 and 12.9 inches of front and rear suspension travel. Premium 2.5-in. aluminum King shocks provide race-proven features like piggyback reservoirs and 30-position compression adjustability for maximum performance, whether it’s crawling over rocks or pounding through bumps. Front and rear swaybars reduce body roll and keep handling smooth and predictable.

The bump-swallowing suspension performance is matched by the 13 inches of class leading ground clearance. Fully-loaded, it boasts upwards of 18 percent more ground clearance than the competition, with 9.5/8.375 inches of front/rear clearance to ride over anything in its way.

When duty calls, a Havoc UTV gets the job done with a 600-lb. capacity rear dump bed that’s aided by the quick and simple Fast-N-Latch bed accessory storage system. Its signature extended cab contributes to the nearly 24-cu.-ft. of added storage that’s easily accessed and substantially useful. A 2,000-lb. towing capacity adds even greater versatility for any job.

Yet there’s no mistaking that a Havoc side-by-side is engineered to deliver heart-pounding thrills with 100 horsepower on tap whenever it’s playtime. That power comes fast and furious thanks to the 957cc SOHC twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled EFI engine that is designed and built by Textron. It feeds its 100 horsepower and 67-ft.-lbs. of torque to a smooth and durable CVT system.

The selectable on-demand AWD system puts the power exactly where it’s needed, while four- wheel hydraulic disc brakes with 9-in. rotors and dual piston calipers deliver enhanced braking performance. Tough 14-in. cast aluminum wheels are matched by burly 28-in. ITP Ultracross tires for outstanding traction and performance.

A Havoc UTV is especially impressive when it comes to occupant comfort, with two-tone bucket seats that offer 4 inches of adjustability and that are easily accessed via full impact- and corrosion- resistant doors boasting a large 10-sq.-ft. opening. The cab is equally spacious, with a full 40 inches between the ROPS cage and the seat for wide and unobstructed views, with 31 inches between the instrument panel and the seatback for maximum comfort. The dash features an industry-leading 5.25 x 3.25-in. LCD display with adjustable backlighting. And high power LED headlights deliver optimum visibility, with LED accent lights for a touch of custom style.

The 2018 Textron Off-Road Wildcat X and Wildcat X Limited deliver the same legendary offroad performance these models are renowned for, but now with the added prestige of a new race inspired ROPS.

From the beginning, the Wildcat X set a new standard in pure-sport ROV performance thanks to a chassis and suspension combo that was purpose built to conquer all types of gnarly terrain.

Inspired by desert race vehicles, the Wildcats’ exoskeleton chassis features a new race-inspired ROPS bringing the ultimate strength and rigidity to the occupant canopy. Its 40-/60-percent front/ rear weight distribution delivers optimal handling at high speed. In addition, the driver and passenger are located near the low center of gravity, leaving them less affected by the movements of the vehicle, enhancing confidence and control.

With an industry-leading 17/18 inches of front/ rear suspension travel and 13 inches of ground clearance, both Wildcats deliver comfort and control in nearly every condition. The 5-link trailing arm rear suspension design keeps the rear tires planted while the suspension moves through its travel for unmatched traction and control.

The Wildcat X models peg the fun meter thanks to their fun and powerful engine. Designed and built by Textron Motors, it’s a liquid-cooled 951cc V-Twin 4-stroke that features Electronic Fuel Injection, a 2-into-1 ceramic-coated exhaust and single 50mm throttle body. Feeding that power and torque to the ground are the TEAM Rapid Response clutches and electronic selectable 2WD/4WD and front differential lock.

Additional comfort-and-control features variable Assist Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system keeps the steering both light and precise. The EPS initiates at engine idle for re¬duced steering effort when in 4WD, especially when the differential lock is engaged. The result is a light steering input effort when negotiating tough obstacles like washouts,
rocks and mud, but with enough feedback so the driver senses the tire contact patch in relation to the terrain.

The Wildcat X comes with JRi ECX-1 compressionadjustable shocks, Duro PowerGrip tires; castaluminum wheels; and half doors. It’s available in Team Arctic Green.

Experience the sweet spot of side-by-side performance with the 2018 Textron Off-Road Wildcat Sport XT and the 2018 Textron Off-Road Wildcat Sport XT, two mid-sized machines from Textron Off Road that deliver great power, optimal comfort and a pedigree that includes wins and top finishes in the sport’s toughest race events.

The Wildcat Sport XT and Wildcat Sport Limited are class leading, two-seat performance machines that slot in-between the original Wildcat X and the Wildcat Trail. The Sport’s chassis is 110.5 in. long and 60 in. wide, compared to the Trail’s 110.5 x 50-in. chassis and the Wildcat X’s 128 x 64-in. chassis. The rider and passenger positions are set a full 3 in. lower than competitive models to produce a low center-of-gravity, leaving the occupants less affected by vehicle movements while optimizing vehicle handling.

A performance engineered chassis complements a bump-swallowing double A-Arm front and swaybar equipped rear suspensions with 12.2 in. and 12.6 in. of front/rear travel, in addition to 13 in. of rock clearing ground clearance. Add 26-in. Carlisle Trail Pro tires to the mix and the result is driving confidence and control in even the gnarliest terrain

Both Wildcat Sport models enjoy the excellent performance of a liquid-cooled 700 parallel twin engine. Featuring a closed-loop EFI system and four valves per cylinder, this powerful engine earns its class-leading distinction for sporty fun, smoothness and durability.

TEAM Rapid Response clutches maximize that horsepower and performance, while electronic selectable 2WD/4WD (with front differential lock) provide the exact riding performance that riders want the moment they ask for it. And dual-piston caliper hydraulic brakes offer enhanced braking performance

When it comes to pure off-road performance for four occupants, the 2018 Wildcat™ 4X Limited from Textron Off Road hits the high marks in suspension, handling and premium components. Add to the mix its powerful V-Twin engine and class-leading suspension package, and riders have all the ingredients for the ultimate off-road adventure for four.

The Wildcat 4X features a stretched exoskeleton chassis that’s 29 inches longer than the standard Wildcat to comfortably accommodate the two rear bucket seats with best-in-class passenger ride-in comfort and legroom.

All four high-back seats feature 3-point belts with four tube-frame doors. Unlike competitive brand machines, the driver and passengers are located near the Wildcats’ low center of gravity, leaving them less affected by the movements of the vehicle with greater confidence and control. With an industry-leading 17/18 inches of front/ rear suspension travel and 13 inches of ground clearance, the Wildcat 4X is built to handle all kinds of terrain with unmatched comfort and control.

The 5-Link trailing-arm rear suspension design keeps the rear tires planted while the suspension moves through its travel for unmatched traction and control, while the double A-arm front is renowned for its cornering and control. Elka Stage 5 premium gas shocks feature low- and high-speed compression and rebound adjustability, as well as spring preload adjustment and 2.5-in. piggyback reservoirs.

Powering the 4x is a fun and torquey engine distinguished for its reliability.

The Wildcat’s Variable Assist Electronic Power Steering (EPS) delivers light steering input effort when negotiating tough obstacles like washouts, rocks and mud, but with enough feedback so the driver senses the tire contact patch in relation to the terrain.

Class-leading LED headlights and taillights shine extra-bright, while a 300 lb. payload rear compartment is large enough to carry a cooler and a Gerry can of gas.

High-performance items such as cast-aluminum beadlock wheels with 27-in. ITP Blackwater Evolution tires; fully adjustable Elka Stage 5 shocks; aluminum front and rear bumpers; full doors; and a sleek molded roof reflect its premium, limited edition appeal. It comes in Dynamic Grey
