Valcourt, Québec, Canada, February 14, 2022 – BRP Inc. (TSX:DOO; NASDAQ:DOOO) continues to see record-high demand for its powersports vehicles, including its award-winning lineup of Can-Am Off-Road vehicles. The company intends to relentlessly build on its momentum and push boundaries, with ongoing investments in innovation and new product development. For the Can-Am Off-Road brand, that means more vehicle news for the MY22 lineup, this time focused on bringing enhanced comfort to the work day.

Since first introduced in 2020, the Can-Am Defender 6×6 has been a workhorse, capable of going places other side-by-side vehicles (SSV) could only dream. It is a go-to vehicle for hunters, ranchers, and landowners looking for an incredibly capable and reliable machine. And now, with the 2022 Can-Am Defender 6×6 Limited, all that capability is available with further comfort. The fully enclosed cab and industry-exclusive auto climate control with air conditioning and heat will ensure all those miserably hot and cold work days are a lot more comfortable.

In addition, the Can-Am Defender 6×6 maintains its industry-leading towing capacity of up to 3,000 lbs., along with the industry’s largest-capacity cargo box with hydraulic power tilt. Plus, a new color-matched door design means people will now enjoy increased visibility, along with better protection and sealing.

“The Can-Am Defender 6×6 is the most capable side-by-side vehicle we’ve ever built,” said Julie Tourville, Director, Global Marketing, Can-Am Off-Road at BRP. “It is the ideal choice for people who require an incredibly tough machine that’s built to match the demanding needs in their off-road way of life. And now with added comfort, it’s the best of both worlds.”

Also new to the MY22 lineup is a Can-Am Defender MAX Lone Star CAB. BRP launched the Defender Lone Star Edition in 2018 as a utility-recreational vehicle loaded with premium features. And it just got a lot more premium with the addition of climate control. A full enclosure and premium full doors (front electric and rear full roll down) keep the air conditioning and heat in, maximizing comfort. The new Defender MAX Lone Star CAB also comes factory-installed with a JL Audio Roof that lets riders set the soundtrack for the day.

BRP unveiled its first wave of MY22 Can-Am Off-Road news back in August across both its SSV and All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) lineups. That news included a 200-hp Can-Am Maverick X3, two new engine options across the SSV lineup, and the expansion of the acclaimed Visco-4Lok 4-wheel drive system on select ATV models. With this latest round of product news, MY22 is the most complete Can-Am Off-Road lineup to date, helping to reinforce the brand’s incredible momentum.
The MY22 Can-Am Off-Road vehicle lineup offers something for all riders, regardless if their Off-Road Livin’ focuses on work, performance, or adventuring.
Valcourt, Quebec, Canada, August 11, 2021 – BRP (TSX: DOO; NASDAQ: DOOO) maintains a constant focus on improving the rider experience across its entire lineup of powersports vehicles. Can-Am Off-Road is a shining example of that, and the results speak for themselves – continuously sweeping podiums at the most grueling races across the globe, helping to drive massive industry growth and attract new riders, and introducing new and improved vehicles to get the job done, no matter the task or adventure at hand.

As the off-road industry continues its incredible growth, riders of all skill levels crave the best machine for their version of Off-Road Livin’. And Can-Am is once again delivering with its 2022 model year lineup of ATVs and side-by-side vehicles – from entry level to top performance. With more horsepower, better traction, enhanced comfort, and so much more, Can-Am is rolling into the new model year with some serious swagger.

Pushing Further, Faster

The Can-Am Maverick X3 lineup of performance off-road vehicles is synonymous with power, handling, and…winning. For 2022, Can-Am is upping the ante, becoming the first side-by-side manufacturer to offer a 200hp engine. That’s a lot of power. And coupled with our all-new pDrive roller clutch system, the entire dynamic changes through quicker acceleration and instant-on power at all times.

And while the Can-Am Maverick X3 delivers the best power-to-weight ratio in its class, handling remains critical to all-around performance. That is why BRP engineers worked tirelessly to ensure the lineup handles terrain with ease, thanks to Smart-Shox adaptive suspension, new 30 and 32-inch Maxxis Carnivore tires, a stronger frame, and higher ground clearance and stance. That total combination is what makes the Maverick the envy of the competition.

“The 2022 Can-Am Maverick X3 is the pinnacle of performance side-by-side vehicles,” said Hailie Deegan, professional racer and Can-Am brand ambassador. “And the best part of working with Can-Am, is they keep making it better and better. There’s no other choice if you’re in the market for the best, and if you enjoy watching others try to keep up in the rearview.”

All-New Engine Options

Speaking of power, Can-Am is introducing two new Rotax engines to its lineup – the HD7/700 ACE and the HD9, replacing the HD5, HD8, and 800.

The Rotax HD7 is set to become the new ruler of the lower-HP class. It will be available in the Can-Am Defender, where it replaces the HD5 with 37% more poweri, and with a sportier calibration, it will power the new Commander 700, and the Maverick Trail 700. The new engine is optimized for off-road usage, delivering an improved experience with less noise, less vibration, and a cooler environment for passengers resulting in a more comfortable ride.

And the Rotax HD9 option replaces the HD8 in the Can-Am Defender lineup. It is a larger, more powerful engine that delivers 30%i more horsepower than its predecessor. It promises the same dependability, with even more workability by way of class-leading power and low-end torque.

“With the addition of the HD7 and HD9 engine options to the already existing HD10, Can-Am is class leading in power and the best option to accomplish the task at hand, whether that’s work or play,” said Christian St-Onge Director Global Product Strategy Can-Am Off-Road Vehicles. “Regardless of your vehicle choice, this lineup is built to perform.”

Visco-4Lok Expansion

On the ATV side, Can-Am is expanding its Visco-4Lok system. It works with the push of a button, where riders can engage a 4-wheel-drive lock mode, which instantly provides equal power to all four wheels for great traction. It will now be available on all 2022 Outlander and Renegade X mr packages, as well as the Outlander XT-P, and Outlander MAX Limited.

With these enhancements across its ATV and side-by-side vehicle lineups, Can-Am is giving all riders what they crave, regardless if they live for performance, or are adventurers embarking on their next epic journey. That is Can-Am Off-Road Livin’.

Can-am is without a doubt a pioneer in many areas in its fields of activity. Therefore it is not surprising that there is a craze for this brand among recreational vehicle enthusiasts. The wide choice of models in Can-Am’s lineup certainly suits the specific needs of each individual.

However, Can-am still has a model that has not undergone significant changes since its introduction over a decade ago. Several rumors had persisted for a few years, and consumers hoped for a redesign of the famous Can-Am Commander.

Bombardier Recreational Products Inc.

A little history

In 2010, BRP introduced the Can-Am Commander, the industry’s most versatile side-by-side vehicle, with a choice of a powerful 800 or 1000cc Rotax V-twin engine, a two-stage cargo box exclusive to the market, and many other unique features.

Since its introduction, the Can-Am Commander has been a recreational and utility vehicle: it is mainly considered a two-seater crossover (and also four-occupant a few years later). It is equipped with all the latest technologies and designed for reliable performance and flawless service. It is the perfect vehicle for work-related outdoor tasks or for covering large areas and a fun machine to drive on many terrains and situations.

One of its main features is the massive storage for virtually any need: watertight spaces, a cargo box, and an upper cargo bed. You can carry a lot of luggage on your long trips in nature, and the cargo capacity is ideal for everyday tasks around the farm, home, or summer cottage. You can also remove the vehicle’s seats and put them near the campfire after a day of work.

The Can-am Commander 2021:

The manufacturer from Valcourt, Quebec, has probably realized that its crossover UTV needed a complete redesign, as it had not kept up with the trends in the industry over the years. The competition has adjusted its offer and is currently proposing more attractive and much better general performance UTVs in the same category.

Consequently, the 2021 lineup is introducing an up-to-date Can-am Commander. The new cuvée is available in 5 variations:

Commander DPS

This model is the most straightforward of the group and is considered the basic model with minimal options. Its suspension travel is 12.5 inches at the front, 13 inches at the rear, and its ground clearance is 12.5 inches. Shocks are adjustable to 5 positions to suit individual preferences. The machine is fitted with 14-inch steel rims mated to 27 inch XPS TRAIL FORCE tires. At 62 inches wide, the Can-am Commander DPS is also the narrowest of all the versions offered.

Commander MAX DPS

This version is similar in every aspect to the DPS mentioned above except that its MAX indication gives the possibility of 4 occupants, and therefore has a longer wheelbase.

Commander XT

At an additional cost, this variant offers several standard additions. It is equipped with a roof, an XT front bumper, a 4,500 lb winch, and a fairlead roller. It also offers stylish 14-inch aluminum rims and 28-inch XPS TRAIL KING tires. The suspension travel is higher than the base model, with 15 inches both front and rear. A-arms are arched to provide better clearance which is 13-inch from the ground. The XT model has a total width of 64 inches. Finally, a 19.3 cm (7.6 in) digital display with a keypad and Can-Am LED signature lights completes this model.

Bombardier Recreational Products Inc.

Commander MAX XT

The MAX version of the Commander is identical to the XT model above, except that it offers the convenience of accommodating four occupants.

Bombardier Recreational Products Inc.

Commander XT-P

The XT-P model of the Can-am Commander is the pinnacle of performance in the crossover category from this manufacturer and, quite logically, the most expensive. In addition to having the same accessories listed on the XT model, it has oversized 30-inch XPS HAMMER FORCE tires mounted on 15-inch cast aluminum beadlock wheels. A standard panoramic central mirror offers better visibility of the competition left behind. It also has arched A-arms providing better obstacle clearance, and the machine ground clearance is slightly higher than the X at 13.5 inches. The high-end FOX Podium 2.5 QS3 3-position shocks give 14 inches of travel both front and rear. Also, it is equipped with the Smart-Lok system, which is the most advanced off-road differential on the market. It is an on-demand fully locking front differential with electronically-controlled automatic modes that always provide maximum traction in all conditions.

Finally, the LED headlights provide better night vision. It should be noted that the XT-P version is not available in a MAX variant.

Enough power to make the competition bite the dust!

The Commander 2021 designers have chosen the perfect engine to make this new version go fast. They stopped their choice on the same motor used in the Maverick Sport. The ROTAX 1000R V-Twin 976cc is perfect for delivering the 100 horsepower needed to propel this UTV. Can-Am’s ITC (Intelligent Throttle Control) is one feature of this vehicle. Throttle response is determined by selecting Sport or Eco modes on the toggle switch mounted on the dashboard. Unlike the centrally mounted engine on the previous Commander version, the 2021 version has a rear engine. This significantly reduces the vibrations and excessive heat. Engine accessibility will also be greatly improved for maintenance by simply tilting the rear body. Finally, the engine air filter has been strategically positioned to facilitate accessibility, inspection, and maintenance.

The Commander uses Quick Response System X CVT (QRS-X) with high-flow ventilation and electronic drive belt protection. The result: adaptive and reliable off-road performance thanks to Turf, 2WD, and 4WD modes with Visco-Lok QE automatic locking front differential. 4WD Trail and Trail ACTIV modes with Smart-Lok technology are only available with the XT-P package.

A not so new chassis

The new Commander essentially borrows the structural components of the Maverick Sport chassis. Its aesthetics are also copied, except that a rear tipper has been integrated. The 75.1 x 114.7 x 27 cm (29.5 x 45.2 x 10.6 in) cargo space allows for a maximum load of 600 lbs, and a cylinder provides full and smooth assistance when tilting the bed. Its 2,000 lb towing capacities are standard in its class.

For 2021, the Commander has improvements to reduce engine noise not found on any Maverick Sport models. A 10 mm acoustic panel located behind the seats minimizes the noise in the passenger compartment. A service opening is also accessible to once again facilitate engine maintenance. The CVT clutch also received improvements using insulating components to muffle the noise coming from the moving parts.

All versions of the Can-Am Commander 2021 are fitted with rubber bushings to ensure the movement of the A-arms suspension. This bonus provides better stability and will improve ride comfort. Therefore, no lubrication is necessary, and annoying suspension noises will be reduced.

The designers wanted to make all the available spaces profitable. Therefore, the rear box’s side panels are removable, allowing you to store a spare belt and some maintenance tools. From hunting gear to camping tools, everything can be secured with the LinQ system. Anchor points allow the installation of over 150 accessories, of which 20 have been specifically developed for this model.

Design and ergonomics

Since the new 2021 Can-am Commander essentially replicates the Can-Am Maverick Sport chassis, we were already well aware of its peculiarities. This chassis has the longest wheelbase of all 2-seater models. This advantage is evident because the wheels’ far away position at the ends of the vehicle provides better stability. In addition, this configuration allows more legroom in the cockpit.

The cabin is designed so that the driver and passengers nestle safely and comfortably onboard. The driver’s seat has 5 inches of adjustment. The steering wheel and attached digital instrument cluster also have 25 degrees of tilt to suit your adjustment needs. There are two angled footrests on the passenger side and ergonomic handles for improved comfort on bumpy trails. The seats are inspired by sports cars, and the seatbacks and lower cushions are removable for easier cleaning.

The versatile design of the all-new Commander allows you to add or remove accessories as needed. It’s easy to organize your gear to your liking with the new passenger-side storage compartment. The 650 watts alternator will provide ample power to rock your favorite music, and you can even easily install additional LED light bars.

In conclusion, Can-am finally got up to date with the upgrade of its Commander models. BRP is not used to being left behind, and in our opinion, it was surprising for them to offer a model which had not kept up with developments. That time is now over.

There are so many sweet UTVs on the market, it can be hard to pick one, right? You walk into the dealership and it’s like being a kid walking into the toy store – how can you decide on just one? We have the same problem, so we wanted to offer some help. We selected five UTVs from various segments, our personal favorites, as our picks for our top 5 UTVs for 2021. Think of it as our way of pushing you in the right direction. Of course, you really can’t go wrong with any of the newest models, so there’s plenty of wiggle room to this list.

Polaris RZR Pro XP Ultimate

There are so many RZR models from Polaris, and we like them all. However, if we had to pick one, we’d of course go with the flagship model. The Pro comes loaded with a 925cc turbo-powered twin cylinder engine. It now pumps out 181 horsepower and is fed through fuel injection. Polaris keeps refining their True On-Demand All-Wheel Drive system and the Pro has their latest Isolated Xtreme Performance version that works optimally with the power characteristics of the motor and how you would use the machine. The Ultimate package gives you fox 2.5 Live valve shocks with Dynamix 2.0 active suspension that self-adjust the valving by the microsecond as you drive, adapting to your style and the terrain. If you’ve never used this type of suspension, you must, and once you do, you won’t want to go back. This is easily the finest RZR we’ve driven and the interior is superbly comfortable. The ROPS and 6-point harness make it safer too, meaning this is a winner for sure.

Yamaha Wolverine RMAX 1000 XT-R

Going along with Yamaha’s reputation for durability is their ability to go anywhere. Yamaha makes machines that are perfect for serious exploration, and the new Wolverine RMAX is a machine we’re very excited about for 2021. These machines perform as well as they look, with a 999cc liquid-cooled twin-cylinder motor and dual throttle body fuel injection. Of course, the motor runs out through Yamaha’s legendary Ultramatic V-belt transmission. Fox QS-3 shocks handle suspension. The XT-R package comes with a Warn winch, and 30-inch Maxxis Carnivore tires. The drive mode system is really cool, with Sport, Trail and Crawl modes, and the Wolverine comes with Yamaha’s Adventure Pro system built in with GPS and more. If you’re drawn to places no one else can go, this is the machine for you.

Honda Talon 1000X Live Valve

Honda brings over the Fox Live Valve suspension system from the 4 seater to the 2-up for 2021 and we’re pretty excited about it. The Talon is a super fun machine to drive and is a machine we’re quite fond of. It is very Honda, in that they don’t do things the same way the other manufacturers do. The biggest thing you’ll find is the DCT dual-Clutch transmission, which we are huge fans of. You can drive it automatic or manual mode and this gives you amazing options for how you tackle the terrain. And engine braking is about as good as it gets. The Honda runs a 999cc Parallel twin motor the Honda live vale system is, in our opinion, one of if not the best of the active suspension systems going thanks, in part, to the Bosch controller, Fox shocks and Honda engineering. This is a fun, naturally-aspirated sport UTV and one of our picks for five best.

Can-Am Defender Pro Limited

The Can-Am Defender line has been one of the best utility/recreation machines out there. For those looking for a serious work machine, the 2021 Defender Pro Limited has it all. For starters, how about the six-foot, power-dumping cargo bed with additional storage underneath? Think of all the stuff you can fit in the bed? But as they say, wait, there’s more. The Limited package adds a full cab with a premium roof, glass front and rear windshield, wiper kit, 7.6-inch digital display with keypad and a heating and air-conditioning system, so you’re comfortable inside the machine regardless of the weather conditions. Add in the usual Defender features like a 976cc Rotax V-twin, Pro-Torq Transmission and the XT front bumper with winch. This is a machine waiting to get something done.

CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 EPS Sport

All you need to do is take a ride in this new ZForce 950 to see how impressive it is. Besides looking completely different than anything else on the trail, this machine is a lot of fun to drive. It has a 963cc motor with a Bosch ignition and fuel injection system. It runs through a CVTech-IBC belt drive and comes with a new Sport Mode that increases acceleration performance when you take off. It comes with a horn and turn signals integrated into the machine as well as a 3,500lb winch, mirrors and a roof. The best part is the value. It comes with a lower price tag than much of the competition and a 5-year warranty. That’s pretty hard to beat.

As I write this, there are new 2021 model UTVs being unveiled by the manufacturers, and if you look at the price tags on some of them, it is stunning how much one can spend on a UTV. I saw one that costs about the same as some new trucks! What is the average person to do? While there are some very expensive UTVs on the market, there are also some pretty sweet deals out there for UTV buyers looking for a capable machine that won’t break the bank. We picked five of what we feel are the best UTVs on a budget that will work to fulfill your needs.

Polaris RZR S 900

Who doesn’t want a RZR? There’s a reason the name is synonymous with sport UTVs. The cost of a RZR can be pretty intimidating to the buyer, however, there are some alternatives you should consider. One of our favorite machines around here is the RZR S 900. Yes, it’s a little more money than the standard RZR 900, or it’s baby brother, the RZR 570, but for just a little more cha-ching, you get a lot more pizzazz! The machine has more than enough power for a spirited trail ride thanks to the DOHC 875cc ProStar twin-cylinder engine that produces a pleasing 75 horsepower. The RZR 900 motor has been around for some time and has proven to be a reliable and fun power plant. It has electronic fuel injection and decent engine braking, a nice feature for a trail machine. It gets that power to the wheels through Polaris’ PVT automatic transmission. Like just about every Polaris machine, the RZR S 900 has their True On-Demand AWD system to keep you rolling along. When in AWD, the machine senses wheel spin and transfers power to other wheels to keep you from getting stuck. This system doesn’t use differential locks, leaving that to the machine to decide when drive axles need to be spinning. It works well and is something Polaris has been using for years.

The main reason we like the RZR S over the 50-inch model is the added width and stability. There’s nothing wrong with the 50-inch machine. It’s great for hitting the trails that have that width limitation, and it pretty much identical to the S. However, the added width of the 60-inch RZR S 900 gives you a lot more comfort, stability and confidence to carry speed through the corners. That’s important because, let’s face it, you buy a RZR to go fast. Other than that, you have decent suspension with dual A-arms all around and Fox 2.0 Podium shocks. It’s really a great buy for the trail rider.

Honda Pioneer 700

The Pioneer 700 was Honda’s second foray into UTVs. The first, the Big Red, didn’t quite hit the mark, but we really like the Pioneer. At first glance, you may thing the Pioneer to be a strictly work UTV, and it does a great job at that, but it is also a truly fun trail machine, too. The standard model seats two and has a dumping cargo box. There are some things about this machine that are definitely Honda. The company doesn’t do things the same way other companies do, but that’s fine. Honda has a great reputation for dependability and durability, so they can keep doing what they do. We like it.

The Pioneer runs on a 675cc single-cylinder engine fed through electronic fuel injection. The transmission is definitely different, being a three-speed automotive-style automatic with a hydraulic torque converter. The deluxe models, which run a little more, give you paddle shifters and the option to run in manual shift mode, or automatic. The Pioneer operates in 2WD, 4WD and 4WD with Dif Lock. We can tell you that the combination of the transmission and the drivetrain makes this 700-class UTV pull like a MUCH bigger machine. If you’re in the market for a trail and utility UTV, and want something a little different than the rest, the Pioneer 700 is a stellar option.

Yamaha Viking

The Viking? I can just about see the groan on your face. The Viking isn’t very exciting, or so it would seem, but it actually is for several reasons. Sure, the Viking is a little long in the tooth, but it remains a great selling unit for Yamaha and we are reminded that we like it every time we drive one. For starters, you’d be hard pressed to find a more reliable machine out there. One of the many great characteristics of Yamaha is the solid construction. They rarely, if ever, break down. And then, it’s often due to neglect on the owner’s part. It is powered by a 686cc, SOHC single-cylinder engine mated to the best CVT transmission on the market. The Ultramatic V-belt tranny is oil-immersed and under constant tension, so there is very little belt wear.

The cab features three bucket seats with a 5-degree recline to the middle seat so everyone isn’t rubbing shoulders together. The cargo bed is nicely sized, with a steel floor section for durability. The Viking is Yamaha’s utility UTV, but it has really nice trail manners. Engine braking is really good on the machine and Yamaha has worked very hard to reduce noise in the cab to make the ride more enjoyable. You can pick one up for around the same as other brand’s mid-size machine, giving you a full-size, capable trail and work machine at a great price.

CF Moto ZForce 500 LX

Probably the best deal going in a 50-inch trail machine is the ZForce 500 LX. You could save a few bucks going with the less-equipped non-LX model, but the added things in the LX or really necessary for the trails, and you will most likely end up adding all of them anyway. These are nice-looking machines with a 495cc engine producing 37.5 HP. It uses a CVTech belt transmission and our experiences with these machines have proven them to be reliable and dependable. They come with a five-year limited warranty, too. Nice touch! The driveline operates in 2WD, 4WD and has an electronic locking differential.

Other standard features we like include the 14-inch aluminum wheels and digital dashboard display. The ZForce also has LED headlights with turn signals, which are required on some trail systems. Side mirrors come standard too. The LX package adds power steering, which you’ll find you want on rugged trails, especially one with rocks or tree roots. It also adds the all-important 3,000lb. winch to help get you out of trouble.

Can-Am Maverick Trail

One of our favorite trail machines since it’s introduction, the Can-Am Maverick Trail is a stellar machine for having fun, and it can be picked up for a great price. We did some extensive driving in the mountains with this machine and appreciate the nimble handling and balance the machine has. It is powered by an 800-class, 799.9cc Rotax V-twin that pumps out a pleasing 51 horsepower.

This is a lower-priced machine aimed at the trail crowd, but the design benefited from developing the bigger, more powerful X3 machines in the Can-Am stable. The drive-by-wire iTC Intelligent Throttle Control and fuel injection system helps feed the motor in a predictable and performance-spirted way. The Quick-Response System CVT-belt transmission has an electronic belt protector and a high-flow air vent that came right off the X3. The iTC system gives you SPORT and ECO modes to give you more power when you want it, or better fuel economy for longer trail rides. There is an electronic engine braking system to help you descend bigger inclines, a feature we’ve put to the test repeatedly.

The big take away

There are many UTVs you can buy that will do pretty much everything you’d want, while not causing you to go into severe debt. What good is a shiny, new UTV if you don’t have the money to put gas in it to go riding, right? Are there less expensive machine on the market? Sure, however, we went looking for ones we consider to be the best for your money. One major thing to keep in mind. One of the issues we often see with people looking for a UTV on a budget, is they will find machines with price tags too good to be true. You know what I’m talking about – brands you’ve never heard of before at prices too low to believe. Trust me, my friend – you don’t want to go that route. You often can’t find parts for these machines and breakdowns happen quite often. Spend a little more up front to save the headaches down the road. After all, you want to be out on the trails, not sitting at home waiting for the repair shop to call.

Some of the most inspirational times in an off-road machine owner’s life could be when the work clock begins to tick at the break of dawn. You may not know what it will take to get your job done correctly and many times it’s during these tough job’s, when necessity is the mother of invention. For the 2020 line of Can-Am Defenders, work has the main stage while still keeping those afternoon rides across the property comfortably in view. We had an opportunity to join Can-Am in the wide-open ranch lands of Texas at the famous Y.O. Ranch Headquarters to not only learn about the history of this beautiful spread but to learn just how well the Can-Am Defender line can work and play in any situation.

Located in Mountain Home Texas, Y.O Ranch Headquarters is one of the premiere hunting destinations in the Lonestar State. This sprawling countryside is home to not only cattle, but it is immersed in a wild variety of wildlife and terrain that will most definitely torture most working machines on the first day of use. Maybe this is why Can-Am decided to introduce the press to their hard-working line-up of Defender’s here and not at the beach!

2020 Can-Am Defender Adventure

Looking at the Can-Am Defender selection laid out in front of the chow hall we noticed the Defender Pro HD10 immediately. The 6ft long 4.5ft wide bed looks like a stretch limo and with the workability of this machine in mind we just had to jump in the cab here first. The bed was full of cargo and a good driving or hauling test was in our near future across the rough Texas dirt. The morning was pretty chilly as temps had not yet gotten up to the “comfortable” mark, but we also knew the Texas heat would be along soon enough so opted for the open cab ride as the sun was waking up the Texas hill side. Slipping effortlessly into the cab of the 2020 Defender Pro HD10 we noticed the smooth level floors which had been embossed for grip. The tilt steering and refined gauge cluster gave us all of the adjustments as well as information we would need to keep check on the rig.

The Defender Pro HD10 is a true utility work machine that has some decent trail manners to as well. If you look at the Defender Pro HD10 from the side, you will notice the length is very similar to the Can-Am Defender Max. That is because the inspiration for this rig was pretty much from that Defender Max with the long bed now extending into where the rear seats would have been. With the underbed storage placed where the floorboard of those backseats used to reside you have what most will realize as the biggest enclosed storage compartment in the UTV industry. Some measure it in gallons but we would say a full-size adult could hide inside the hull of the ship. While it is not completely watertight it is a space for most any hand tool, bushel bags of seed or hunting gear. If the bed is not wide open enough for you just remove the sides of the bed and you can haul anything from a pallet of feed or even a full-size ATV. This Defender Pro is very versatile and this flatbed conversion makes this rig a ranchers dream.

2020 Can-Am Defender Adventure

Our ride in the Defender Pro HD10 took us into the hills surrounding the Y.O. Ranch Headquarters and it was immediately clear just how quiet the cab of the machine is. The 82hp Rotax mill is much farther behind the cab and with 69ft pound of torque the grunt for the 1000lb cargo bed is sufficient. Can-Am not only recalibrated the CVT for the hefty 2500lb towing capability but they also reduced the shift points down by 500rpm to add to that working situation. The suspension gets some help in the ground clearing section of the spec sheet as the front and rear arms are arched to allow more space down the center belly of the Defender Pro. The huge rocks and old tree stumps were a concern along the trail ride but never gave the Defender any trouble most likely due to the 13-inches of ground clearance. The weight in the bed that we had mentioned before however, made some off-camber sections of trail a bit tricky, but the predictable handling managed to keep us cruising along for the ride.

Once we switched to an unloaded version of the same Defender Pro HD10 it was clear that in any suit, the Defender Pro would be a viable option for any working situation. Can-Am also managed to add a 30% increase in rigidity to the framework while reducing the overall weight by a few pounds. The length of the Defender Pro also helped the overall handling when the trail speeds picked up just a bit and with 11-inches of suspension travel both front and rear the ride did seem pretty plush. It’s not like we were racing in this machine, but you will notice a good smooth chassis manner in most any situation and quickly realize why Can-Am says that it is Tough, Capable and clever.

2020 Can-Am Defender Adventure

As we mentioned beforehand, the temperature was chilly for the morning. A little “experienced” editor trick was to allow the rookies to spend the cool morning in the new Can-Am Defender Limited HVAC edition models while we knew the heat was coming in the mid-day ride and could possibly be much more unbearable. After a brief lunch it was time to hit the trails again and get a handle on just how well the latest in Can-Am technology would suit us in the hills of Y.O. Ranch Headquarters.

Getting into the Can-Am Defender Limited HD10 is like slipping into a very high-end car. The cab is quite possibly one of the best in the business and it really feels like a million bucks. The doors feel solid and the sealing of the cab is so tight that rolling down the “electric” windows is sometimes necessary to get them to close up. It’s incredibly quiet in the cab and once seated inside you feel like you are in your own little world. Just like we have come to expect from any Can-Am Defender model the floor and seating flows well for continual entrance and exit from either side. The very first thing that caught our attention was the extremely well laid out dash and HVAC control panel. The Heat and AC in the Defender Limited are controlled by a single dial that sets the temp for the ride to auto climate. This means if you want the cab at 70 degrees simply turn the dial to that temp and get on about your business. The AC compressor on this rig is a variable style design that works efficiently whether you are stopped or running down the trail at 30mph. I guess an easier way to understand that is that the compressor works to cool the cab even at idle where other brands in the same category only really work well when the engine RPMs are high enough to engage the compressor.

With the cab cooling us off and our tour guide lead us into the hills of Mountain Home Texas where we quickly began to fall in love with this Defender. The handling as well as comfort of the ride is what we have all come to love and somewhat expect from the Can-Am brand but it’s also the fine details that add to the enjoyment of the trail. As we rode through layers of dust in Y.O. Ranch Headquarters backcountry we started to really notice those finer details. With the cab sealed there is always the thought of outside fresh air being pulled in and utilized for temperature control. Well, the cab has its own air filter, keeping the dust out of the fresh air coming into the passenger compartment. As if the AC and heat, electric windows and great looks are not big enough selling points, this Defender HD10 Limited comes with an 850watt magneto, 7.6 inch display and keypad as well as signature LED accent lighting under the newly revised front fascia look.

Riding in the Texas backcountry is absolutely spectacular and doing it in style is something that cannot be forgotten. Easing around the wildlife in the trails from huge long horn cattle to even whitetail deer, turkey and black buck made the day of riding that much more fascinating. A full day of experience in two of the 2020 Defender models is enough to set your mind at ease that Can-Am is building very much quality and reliable off-road machines. Not to mention they also know what a hard day of work feels like and are willing to do anything to build machines to ease that stress from your shoulders.

Las Vegas, Nv, Sept. 10, 2019 – BRP (TSX: DOO; NASDAQ: DOOO) has unveiled two new additions to its acclaimed Can-Am Defender side-by-side vehicle family for 2020. Each takes the side-by-side riding experience to the next level, and is designed specifically to improve the lives of those who are out there working the land and also like to kick back and enjoy themselves.

Can-Am innovates with the new Defender PRO HD10, featuring a six-foot multifunctional cargo box along with a lower box storage area accessible from both sides which workers will certainly appreciate, and the new Defender Limited has climate control to maintain the perfect cab temperature year-round. Both are capable of working hard without sacrificing the fun factor so you can ride and play with friends and family when the duties are over.

Can-Am brings more: working capacity, comfort, quietness, and fun

You don’t have to worry about weather in the 2020 Can-Am Defender Limited HD10. Off-roaders can brave the elements in style and comfort in the industry’s first climate-controlled cockpit, which is fully enclosed. When the cold, heat, wind, or rain strike, the heating and newly added air conditioning system keep you comfortable for a dry, dust-free ride. Just set it to automatic mode and enjoy. It is also the quietest cab out there and is available as a three- or six-seater.

With its incredible versatility, the Defender PRO HD10 lets you do more and tow more while navigating demanding terrain. The long cargo box doubles loading capacity compared to the regular box, increasing your efficiency on the job. Plus, its innovative design includes a lower box storage area and an adaptable flatbed configuration for maximized hauling solutions.

“The utility-recreation segment of off-road vehicles is growing every year, and we are as committed as ever to product innovation that provides the best possible solution for hard work and play,” said Bernard Guy, Senior Vice President, Global Product Strategy, BRP. “Can-Am Defender owners need toughness and capability, and both new models balance that with enhanced comfort and versatility. It’s really the best of both worlds.”

The all-new models are also equipped with a remodeled frame and a redesigned front end that enhances looks, ride quality, and durability for a wide assortment of off-road tasks. The entire 2020 Can-Am Defender fleet is available with an 82-hp Rotax HD10 engine that offers a segment- leading 69 lb-ft of torque.

2020 CAN-AM DEFENDER LIMITED PACKAGES AND DEFENDER PRO HD10 MODELS BRING ADDED VALUE, MORE CAPABILITIES TO UTILITY-RECREATIONAL LINEUP

Can-Am has broadened its line of tough, capable and clever Defender utility-recreational side-by-side vehicles with the introduction of the new comfortable-and-quiet premium Defender Limited packages and the distinctive Defender PRO HD10 vehicles, both of which benefit from the 2020 family refresh.

The Defender Limited with heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is the perfect all-season vehicle to overcome fluctuating conditions by offering a climate-controlled cab with the industry’s first automatic mode and a variable compressor, regulating the air-tight cabin’s temperature. Delivering unrivaled comfort includes the ability to shield occupants from the outside environment (cold, heat, rain and dust) and to provide a quieter and more spacious cab overall. The Defender Limited vehicles are available in three-person and six-person (MAX) packages to accommodate both people and hauling needs. They include a huge 2,500-lbs. towing capacity.

The new Defender PRO HD10, designed for hard work, advances both cargo hauling and adaptability with its massive multifunction 6-ft. x 4.5-ft. (180.3 cm x 138.4 cm) cargo box with convertible flatbed design and pass-through lower storage. Its extended wheelbase offers exceptional stability while also reducing the amount of noise and vibration entering the cockpit due to its proximity to rear axle. The Defender PRO HD10 can seat up to three riders and is available in both Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) and XT packages.

Both Defender off-road vehicles include the 2020 family’s refined styling, added protection, enhanced capabilities and enriched comfort. The new Defender packages are powered by the quieter 1000cc Rotax V-twin engine that offers 82hp and 69 lb-ft of torque for towing and demanding tasks. A thicker firewall dampens sound and acts as a heat barrier between the occupant and the engine components. A quiet exhaust system along with the Defender vehicle’s recalibrated CVT, with a reduced shift line of 500 RPM, The HD10 ECO mode supplies optimal smoothness to eliminate cockpit noise and vibration, especially during extreme acceleration.

Heavy-duty front steel XT bumpers (Limited and XT packages) and an upper bumper plate enhance vehicle protection while also improving its overall durability. The Dual Phase reinforced steel frame was lightened (-5-lbs.) and offers 30% more rigidity on all 2020 Defender vehicles. These two HD10-powerd Defender vehicles also have the enhanced ride quality, with the family’s updated suspension calibration and front and rear arched A-arms that provide extra clearance for obstacle crossings. This design also expands the width to a very stable 64-in. (162.5 cm). ). The addition of the brake holding mechanism (Limited and PRO XT packages only) ensures seamless operation when hauling heavier loads, traversing hills and technical terrain.

Both new Defender side-by-side vehicles have the new 2020 styling (front fascia, redesigned grille and hood) to maintain the family heritage and look. Inside the cockpit, the Defender vehicles feature either an informative 4.5-in. (Defender PRO packages) or a larger 7.6-in. (19.3 cm) display for a distinguished look, improved functioning and easier reading.

Like the duty-motivated Defender 6×6 DPS HD10, the Defender PRO DPS HD10 and PRO XT HD10 arrive with a staggering work-first attitude, outstanding adaptability and heavy-duty disposition, making them ideal for job sites, farming, hunting and trail escapades. The utility-recreational taskmaster, which is built on the 2020 Defender MAX chassis, can tow up to a massive 2,500-lbs. capacity, 1,700-lbs. (771 kg) payload and has around 100-Gal. (380 L) of onboard storage. It also has an enormous cargo bed offering 100% more bed capacity than regular Defender cargo box. For those who live outdoors and take challenges head on, the Defender PRO DPS HD10 (and PRO XT HD10) is the go-to machine for heavy lifting and gratifying exploration.

CAN-AM DEFENDER LIMITED HD10 w/HVAC

The Defender Limited HD10 package, is available with the Rotax HD10 engine, includes a fully enclosed Cab system with HVAC system. Along with full-seal cab, the onboard, factory-installed Cab kit includes an updated integrated heat management system, air conditioning and an industry-exclusive automatic mode. The auto mode regulates temperatures by operating the heater, A/C and airflow jointly. It is capable, without manual adjustment, of modulating power output of the airflow once the desired interior temperature is met. An onboard compressor improves fuel efficiency while also stabilizing ambient temps and decreasing horsepower loss.

TOUGH
Rotax V-Twin Engine
The 976cc 82hp Rotax HD10 V-Twin is specifically tuned for serious work but also offers the industry’s top torque (69 lb-ft) and peak torque at lower RPM for optimal delivery for recreational use. The V-Twin engines are located in the rear of the Defender chassis to reduce noise, vibration and cockpit heat as well as improved access.

Intelligent Throttle Control (iTCTM) with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI)
The EFI-fed Defender Limited packages include intelligent Throttle Control (iTC), which provides smooth throttle delivery even if the driver’s foot is bouncing in rough terrain.

PRO-TORQ Transmission
The PRO-TORQ Transmission is calibrated to meet the demands of the Defender side-by-side vehicles and includes a Quick Response System (QRS) to enhance low-speed riding, deliver smoother and more responsive power delivery and offers precise engagement. A work-specific low gear ensures optimal torque delivery for heavy loads. At low speeds, optimized ventilation improves belt durability and ensures more efficient power transfer. Electronic Drive Belt Protection monitors the CVT belt to determine its condition and alerting the driver to be in low gear. Defender side-by-side vehicles come standard with Park, Reverse, Neutral, High and extra Low. Integrated electronic hill descent control supplies smooth, predictable deceleration. The HD10 CVT’s 2020 calibration lowered the shift line by 500 rpm and also reduced the vehicle’s sound output under heavy acceleration.

Dynamic Power Steering
The DPS system is tuned for utility applications while also offering responsiveness for recreational usage. DPS improves steering feel in slow-speed working situations and in more technical terrain. It also is designed to offer less assistance at high speed and more assistance at low speed.

True 4-mode traction system with Turf Mode and front auto-locking Visco-Lok QE
The Defender side-by-side vehicle offers a 4-mode traction system with choices for varying terrain and tasks. Users, via separate front-and-rear toggle switches, can select between a 2×4 open rear differential for tight turning and turf protection, a 2×4 lockable rear for improved 2WD traction, a 4×4 open rear for more maneuverability in rugged terrain and a 4×4 locked rear for maximum traction.

Three driving modes
The driver can select between three different driving modes on the Can-Am Defender to adapt to both personal preference and the riding conditions: ECO, Normal and Work. Normal mode has no speed or torque limitations and is optimized for recreational use with no load or a light workload. Work mode is calibrated for working with high loads in a gentle manner, offering a smooth power delivery, still with full power and torque. ECO mode, which was revised for 2020 to create even smoother operation, limits both high-range speed and torque to produce moderate driving with regulated-but-smooth acceleration.

Thicker firewall
All 2020 Can-Am Defender vehicles now have a thicker firewall to produce a sound and heat barrier between the occupant and engine components.

High rigidity chassis
The Defender is extremely capable off-road and a legitimate workhorse that uses revised Dual-Phase steel chassis with automotive-like technology and fabrication tolerances that are in line with modern pick-up trucks. The new frame, which features a new integrated steel bumper and bumper plate, offers 30% more rigidity and weighs 5-lbs. less than the previous generation. The Dual-Phase grade steel means a more rigid design for taking the strain of heavy-duty chores.

850-W magneto
This package provides an extremely powerful magneto, an 850-W output, for handling high-powered lighting or other key accessories.

New Lineup of 2020 Can-Am Defender Side-by-Side Vehicles

CAPABLE
Arched double A-arm front suspension with sway bar and tube gas charged shocks. (10-in. / 25.4 cm travel)
The Defender Limited HD10 has a front, arched double A-arm suspension system designed to offer an enhanced stance, more control and improve handling by adding ride clearance when navigating muddy terrain and rugged trails. With 10-in. of travel, the ride is smooth in all situations, even when carrying heavy loads. Larger-bore shocks also enhance overall durability.

TTA rear suspension with arched arms, external sway bar and twin tube gas charged shocks
(10-in. / 25.4 cm travel)
The arched Torsional Trailing A-arms (TTA) rear suspension, which was designed specifically for a utility and recreational usage, offers a full 10-in. of travel to provide a smooth ride even in the most demanding terrain. Its architecture offers optimal comfort, ride clearance and drivability in all conditions, thanks to no camber change. The Defender vehicle’s TTA wears more bushings than some competitive units and is also larger and greaseable on both the chassis and knuckle, resulting in a more durable setup. In addition, the TTA features a wear plate between the suspension and the chassis, preventing direct friction between those two. This all translates to a more controlled wheel movement when driving, and an increased longevity. The system also includes a larger shock bore for better durability.

12-in. of ground clearance
The ground clearance of the Defender Limited HD10 is 12-in. (30.5 cm), offering excellent maneuverability in challenging terrain.

27-in. Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires
Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires feature a rugged six-ply radial construction and are lightweight to cut down on unsprung weight. The tires are very capable of climbing and clawing across tough terrain and also absorb varying surfaces for a smooth ride and predictable cornering.

14-in. Cast-Aluminum Wheels
14-in. (35.6 cm) cast-aluminum wheels give the Defender Limited HD10 vehicle a refined look. The lighter weight wheels are durable for the demanding mud and have an attractive machined design to complete the vehicle’s awesome look.

Full skid plate
An HMWPE full skid plate lines the underside on the Defender vehicles to protect your vehicle from the asperity of the ground.

Brake holding mechanism
A foot-operated brake holding mechanism improves operation during work, letting owners engage the brake holding mechanism, which then facilitates transmission engagement.

Four 220 mm disc brakes with hydraulic piston calipers
The Defender side-by-side vehicle uses twin piston calipers with two 220 mm discs up front and two 220 mm discs with a single piston caliper at the rear for superior stopping force when pulling heavy loads.

140-W lighting output and LED tail lights
For a superb wide-visibility, two 35-W reflectors on each side run at 70-W on high beam to provide more than enough candlepower for early-morning scouting trips, trail rides or late-night farm chores. LED Taillights enhance visibility in all conditions and add to the unmatched fit-and-finish.

Optimal weight distribution
The 47 / 53 weight distribution ensures a strong footing whatever the nature of the ride or the landscape.

CLEVER
HVAC system

The factory-installed, integrated HVAC system keeps occupants warm even on the coldest morning and cool and comfortable on the hottest summer day. For climate control, you can select from three different modes: Heat, air conditioning and industry-exclusive automatic mode. Auto allows for temperature regulation, without manual adjustments, by operating the heater, A/C and airflow jointly modulating power output once a desired temperature is reached. A variable compressor allows more cooling capacity at idle, improves fuel efficiency and also decreases hp loss when A/C is not needed.

HVAC and more perfectly sealed cabin ensure a dust-free environment to enhance air quality. Relocated air vents provide maximum cooling and heating efficiency. Eight vents (4 front, 2 lower feet and 2 front window) ensure proper airflow.
CAN-AM DEFENDER MAX LIMITED HD10 w/HVAC

– Added/upgraded features from Defender Limited HD10
The Defender MAX Limited HD10, includes the full-cab enclosure and HVAC system like its single-seat brother, but can haul more people and gear thanks to its spacious seating for six. In addition to the Defender MAX XT features as standard equipment, the MAX Limited HD10 unit’s cab includes a full glass windshield, wiper/washer kit, full doors with electric windows (front) and hinged windows (rear), hard roof with liner, an interior dome light and a fixed rear glass window. It also benefits from the 82hp Rotax HD10 V-twin, improved XT bumper, as well as the family’s styling and comfort enhancements. Again, slight changes to make it into a 6-seater model include a longer wheelbase (+32.5-in.) of 115.5-in. (294 cm) and a larger payload.

TOUGH
Rotax V-Twin Engine
The 82hp Rotax HD10 V-Twin is specifically tuned for serious work but also offers the industry’s top torque (69 lb-ft) and peak torque at lower RPM for optimal delivery during recreational use.

Intelligent Throttle Control (iTCTM) with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI)
The EFI-fed Defender Limited packages include intelligent Throttle Control (iTC), which provides smooth throttle delivery even if the driver’s foot is bouncing in rough terrain.

PRO-TORQ Transmission
The CVT’s calibration, which lowered the shift line by 500 rpm, was updated for 2020 to reduce the vehicle’s sound under heavy acceleration. The Defender HD10 side-by-side vehicles come standard with Park, Reverse, Neutral, High and Extra-Low ranges. Integrated hill descent control supplies smooth, predictable deceleration. Electronic Drive Belt Protection monitors the CVT belt to determine its condition and alerting the driver to be in low gear. A helical gear transmission provides a quiet environment for the operator.

The Defender MAX side-by-side vehicle offers a 4-mode traction system with choices for varying terrain and tasks. Regardless of mode, the Defender MAX side-by-side vehicle is designed to offer a tight turning radius for improved maneuvering in tight, technical terrain. The rear differential is gear-on-gear to the transmission for better response, no maintenance, better efficiency and fewer components.

The Defender MAX side-by-side has a powerful 850-W magneto capable of handling high-powered lighting and other electrical accessories.

TOUGH
Arched Double A-arm front suspension with sway bar and tube gas charged shocks (10-in. / 25.4 cm travel)
The Defender MAX Limited HD10 vehicle has an arched front double A-arm suspension system designed to offer a wider stance for improved predictable handling and control even in difficult terrain. With 10-in. of travel, the ride is smooth in all situations, even when carrying heavy loads.

Arched TTA rear suspension (10-in.

12-in. (30.5 cm) ground clearance
Defender MAX Limited HD10 side-by-side vehicle offers 12-in. (30.5 cm) of ground clearance for maximum performance for conquering difficult terrain or carrying a maximum load.

27-in. (68.8 cm) Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires
Larger 27-in. Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires feature a rugged radial construction and are lightweight to cut down on unsprung weight. The non-directional tires are very capable of climbing and clawing across tough terrain and also absorb varying surfaces for a smooth ride and provide predictable cornering.

14-in. (35.6 cm) cast-aluminum wheels
Sturdy, lightweight, 14-in. cast-aluminum wheels with a painted black finish come standard.

Full HMWPE skid plate
An HMWPE full skid plate lines the underside on the Defender vehicles to protect your vehicle from the asperity of the ground.

Brake holding mechanism
A foot-operated brake holding mechanism improves operation during work, letting owners engage the brake holding mechanism, which then facilitates transmission

CLEVER
HVAC system
The factory-installed, integrated HVAC system keeps occupants warm even on the coldest morning and cool and comfortable on the hottest summer day. For climate control, you can select from three different modes: Heat, air conditioning and industry-exclusive automatic mode. Auto allows for temperature regulation, without manual adjustments, by operating the heater, A/C and airflow jointly, modulating power output once a desired temperature is reached. An onboard variable compressor allows more cooling capacity at idle, improves fuel efficiency and also decreases hp loss when A/C is not needed.

HVAC and more perfectly sealed cabin ensure a dust-free environment to enhance air quality. Relocated air vents provide maximum cooling and heating efficiency. Eight vents (4 front, 2 lower feet and 2 front window) ensure proper airflow. The system also re-circulates air, automatically introducing fresh air, to maintain ambient air temperature and minimize humidity. Similar to automotive designs, an easy-access cabin air filter can be replaced.

Full hard roof with liner and dome light
A durable, heavy-duty plastic roof with an integrated liner protects the occupants from elements while giving the Defender units a custom appearance and unbeatable fit-and-finish. A standard dome light helps illuminate the cab during low-light situations.

Full doors with electric opening windows
The Can-am Defender MAX Limited HD10 features full black doors to enclose all the occupants within the cab. The comfortable and spacious cabin also offers the occupants protection from the elements and, with an integrated heater, warmth in cool regions. The durable doors have modern, electronic-opening windows for added convenience.

Full-glass, tilt-up windshield with wiper and washer kit & rear glass
The full, high-grade glass windshield is durable and scratch resistant. It also includes a wiper and washer kit with a 0.4-Gal. (1.9 L) reservoir for improved visibility in wet weather or muddy conditions. The windshield can also be tilted up (three positions) and outward to increase airflow to the occupants during mild conditions. The switch allowing for opening and tilting the front window was enhanced for increased reliability. This package now features a fixed rear window.

XT front bumper
A durable XT front bumper extends out from the vehicle to enhance the vehicle’s front styling and adds protection for the vehicle’s front end, headlights and panels from damage in extreme usage conditions.

Dual Limited Versa-Pro Bench Seats; Pick-Up Truck-Inspired Seating
Specialty, dual VERSA-PRO bench seats, engineered as a 40/20/40 bench seat, are found on the MAX Limited HD10 package. Inspired by modern pick-up trucks, the Defender MAX side-by-side vehicle can comfortably accommodate up to six adults and features profiled corners to improve entry/exit of the cab as well as an ultra-sturdy Limited reinforced seat cover for improved wear resistance and customized look. The six passenger seats have integrated hooks on their underside and can be flipped up to improve onboard storage. Can-Am designers also added front and rear foldable armrests with cup holders for additional convenience. In addition, the Limited VERSA-PRO bench seat offers a 3-in. (8 cm) adjustable driver’s seat (forward/rearward) for added comfort and better ingress/egress.

Tilt steering
The steering wheel was specifically designed for utility applications with a larger diameter for improved handling and control. The automotive-like tilt steering wheel lets drivers adjust (up to 25 degrees) it to their driving style and ergonomic preference. It offers also an easier maneuvering while entering/exiting the vehicle.

Versatile, integrated Cargo box with sturdy tailgate
The highly durable Cargo box has a 1,000-lbs. / 454 kg (600-lbs. / 272.2 kg in California model) load capacity and has dump assist levers. It also features a versatile configuration that can create a customizable dual- level setup or completely separate compartments. Strategic features include 5-Gal. (18.9 L) pail recesses, integrated anchors on the sidewalls and several tie-down points for added convenience. To fully optimize the sizeable cargo box, consumers can divide up the box using the integrated recesses. The box allows for both 1×3 (in.) and plywood separators and accepts bed extenders for refining the bed’s overall dimensions. The cargo box is adaptable to accept 14 LinQ quick-attach accessories for further customization. Complete with cable supports and metal bars, the reinforced tailgate can withstand ordinary farm use and serve as a seat during your lunch break (max weight: 250-lbs. / 113.4 kg). For ease of usage, the tailgate can be removed in seconds without tools. A cargo box deflector rests between the front of the cargo box and the cab and prevents cargo and trail debris from leaving the cargo box.

CAN-AM DEFENDER PRO DPS HD10

The all-new Defender PRO DPS HD10 side-by-side vehicle, much like its 6×6 DPS brother, offers uncompromising adaptability, immense capacities for storage and a heavy-duty attitude for taking on challenging tasks and difficult terrain. This Can-Am vehicle takes on all the 2020 Defender updates, including styling, performance and chassis enhancements. Along with being quiet, comfortable, clever, it’s also a dependable workhorse thanks to its versatile functionality and ability to transport up to three adult passengers. The muscular Defender PRO, uses the new more powerful 82hp HD10.

The durable reinforced transmission and the powerful 82hp HD10 Rotax engine, with its industry-leading 69 lb-ft torque, is the ultimate taskmaster with a class-leading 2,500-lbs. towing capacity. Strength and resourcefulness combine with an untiring amount of useable traction for maneuvering through rugged landscapes, even with a full load. A key feature is the useful cargo bed, measuring 6-ft. x 4.5-ft (180.3 cm x 138.4 cm), with removable side panels and easy load dumping. The convertible flatbed design allows you to match the vehicle to each specific job. The Defender PRO HD10 is for serious professionals who work as hard as they play.

Rotax V-Twin Engine
The Defender PRO package is powered by a powerful 82hp Rotax HD10 V-Twin engine. It is specifically tuned for serious work, but also offers industry-leading 69 lb-ft of torque for optimal delivery for recreational use. The V-Twin engine is located in the far rear of the Defender chassis to reduce noise and vibration, while also eliminating cockpit heat. The location also improves access for you DIYers and regular maintenance checks.

Intelligent Throttle Control (iTCTM) with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI)
The EFI-fed Defender includes intelligent Throttle Control (iTC), which provides smooth throttle delivery even if the driver’s foot is bouncing in rough terrain.

Revised for 2020, ECO mode limits both high-range speed and torque to produce moderate driving. The ECO mode now offers less cockpit noise and vibration and optimizing engine smoothness.

Dynamic Power Steering
Standard on all DPS-equipped vehicles, the refined second-generation DPS system is tuned for utility applications while also offering responsiveness for recreational usage. DPS improves steering feel in slow- speed working situations and in more technical terrain. It also is designed to offer less assistance at high speed and more assistance at low speed.
Auto-locking Visco-Lok QE front differential

The Visco-Lok QE system features quick engagement calibration to supply an even quicker interaction from the front differential, which can lock up to 100 percent with no rev or speed limiter.

Thick firewall
All Can-Am Defender vehicles have a thick firewall to produce a sound and heat barrier between the occupant and engine components.

High rigidity chassis
The Defender PRO HD10 excels off-road and is a legitimate workhorse that uses a Dual-Phase steel chassis with automotive-like technology and fabrication tolerances that are in line with modern pick-up trucks. The frame has an integrated steel bumper and bumper plate and offers more rigidity. The Dual-Phase (DP) grade steel means a more rigid design for taking the strain of heavy-duty chores.

Front bumper
The integrated central front steel bumper offers protection for the front end and is minimalistic in its appearance.

HMWPE central skid plate
A HMWPE central skid plate lines the underside on the Defender vehicles to protect your vehicle from the asperity of the ground.

Arched double A-arm front suspension (11-in. / 27.9 cm travel)
The Defender vehicles have an arched double A-arm front suspension system with twin tube gas charged shocks. The system is designed to offer predictable handling and control even in difficult terrain. With 11-in. of travel, the ride is smooth in all situations, even when carrying heavy loads.

Arched TTA rear suspension with external sway bar and twin tube gas charged shocks
The Arched Torsional Trailing A-arms (TTA) rear suspension, which was designed specifically for a utility and recreational usage, offers a full 11-in. of travel and features and extra rear axle. Its architecture offers optimal comfort and drivability in all conditions, thanks to no camber change, and provides extra clearance near the wheel.

28-in. Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires
Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires feature a rugged radial construction and are lightweight to cut down on unsprung weight. The 28-in.

Can-Am Defender MAX Lone Star HD10

To ensure the new Defender HD10 is more comfortable than ever, the vehicle now has the industry’s quietest 1000c V-twin engine. A thicker firewall acts as an improved sound and heat barrier between the occupant and engine components. A new low-sound exhaust system has a unique smooth low intensity with its own distinct sound. Recalibration in the CVT reduced shift line by 500 RPM resulting in quieter operation under heavy acceleration. For smoother operation to equal the reduce sound output, the driving mode reduces power. Speaking of power, the more powerful 82hp Defender Rotax HD10 engine also received a new cylinder head to increase airflow. It offers an industry-leading 69 lb-ft of torque or massive low-end towing strength.

Raising the bar on vehicle protection, Can-Am added a rugged front steel bumper and upper bumper plate. The heavy-duty XT bumper was strengthened to ensure durability in extreme use while looking bold. The revised Dual Phase steel frame was reinforced and lightened (-5-lbs.), offering up to 30% more rigidity. Another critical feature on the 2020 Defender SSVs is their enhanced ride quality. This was achieved with a new suspension calibration and also new front and rear 64-in. arched A-arms that providing extra clearance for obstacle crossings. A new brake holding mechanism improves operation on hills.

Inside the cockpit, certain Defender vehicles feature either a new 4.5-in. digital display or 7.6-in. display with keypad (X mr, XT-P and Lone Star) for a more polished look and easier reading.

The all-new, super-tough Defender 6×6 DPS HD10 arrives with a herculean attitude, incomparable adaptability and heavy-duty configuration, making it the instant workhorse of the family and an ideal hunting companion. The muscular 6×6, complete with a durable reinforced transmission and the new more powerful HD10 Rotax engine, is a true taskmaster capable of towing up to a leading 3,000-lbs. capacity. Combining the exceptional power and torque with the Multi-traction mode (4×4 and true 6×6) means unbeatable traction and floatability for maneuvering across rugged terrain even with a load.

The Defender 6×6 has the inner brawn to tackle challenging jobs and terrain, but it’s the vehicle’s clever and adaptable design that takes versatility to the next level. The enormous cargo bed (4.5ft x 6ft) offers double the loading capacity over the regular Defender cargo box. The convertible cargo box design includes removable sides, offering a flatbed setup in seconds. This gives owners the ability to change the configuration to match the load.

Since its inception in 2017, the Maverick X3 super-sport side-by-side vehicle has impressed the masses with its invigorating performance and one-of-a-kind styling. Can-Am has reinforced its performance authority for 2020 with a new Maverick X3 Turbo RR engine that now supplies an industry-leading 195hp. That’s a gain of 23hp and 11 lb-ft (135 lb-ft) from the new Rotax mill. These reliable gains were achieved by adding a bigger turbo, intercooler and a less restrictive airbox to increase airflow and also simultaneously enhancing reliability. Internally, the new Rotax engine uses a Rotax-manufactured turbo and pistons to assure maximum quality. The CVT was also recalibrated to match the new performance levels and improve belt longevity.

It’s a question we get asked all the time, almost as often as we’re asked how people can get a job like ours. While publishing a UTV magazine may seem glamorous and such, it’s a lot of hard work testing, evaluating, photographing and writing about various machines. No the question we get hit with a lot goes like this, “So Mario, which UTV is the best?” Most people generally don’t like my answer, as I replay that it truly depends on what they want the machine to do, and how they intend to make it do it.

There is simply no single best UTV out there. I’m not trying to dodge the question in any way, or downplay anyone’s personal brand preferences, which play a lot into what machines people think are the best. It did, however, really get me to thinking about a list of say, the five best UTVs available at the moment I write this. That I can do. Here are the five best UTVs available right now in no particular order, and what about them puts them on this list.

YAMAHA WOLVERINE X2 R-SPEC

With the introduction of the X4, it was only a matter of months before Yamaha unleashed the revised two-passenger version of the popular Wolverine. The X2 shares the engine and basic chassis of the X4. You get the same ultra-reliable transmission and 847cc parallel twin, fuel injected engine. The rear cargo area is now a full dumping cargo box, giving you more options when it comes time to use the Wolverine for chores. But the great outdoors and adventure is more to the X2’s liking, and it comes pre-wired for Yamaha’s new Adventure Pro GPS system. Like the previous model Wolverine’s the R-SPEC adds piggyback KYB shocks at all four corners. These shocks give a plusher ride and are better equipped for serious adventuring. The R-SPEC models get sun tops and aluminum wheels.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

The Wolverine X2 is a seriously good handling machine with an engine that operates so quietly, you’ll question whether it is really running at times. There are a few key areas that Yamaha rules the industry with. They have the best CVT transmission going, with tremendous belt life. The system shifts smoothly, never fails and you’d honestly have to try very hard to damage it. Yamaha was the first out with power steering, and that is evident with the handling of the X2. This is one of the best-handling adventure machines on the market. It’s not a pure sport machine, but Yamaha isn’t going after the RZR crowd with the Wolverine. If your idea of fun is getting back into country that is difficult to reach, or clawing your way up to the top of a nasty, rutted, wooded hillside, the Wolverine is calling your name.

Yamaha is a firm believer that their products produce the power you can use as opposed to the power you think you need. This is very evident with the X2’s engine. While some bemoan the engine’s power output and tout horsepower figures published by other brands, Yamaha likes to tell people to get behind the wheel and use the machine in the environment it was meant for and then see if the power output works. We can say with certainty that the Yamaha Wolverine X2 has plenty of power for doing what it was intended for and you’ll be totally happy with it. Combine the aspects of power, superb handling and amazing reliability, and you can see how the X2 makes this list with ease.

TEXTRON WILDCAT XX

When a bunch of UTV magazine editors get together for an event, a lot of bench racing and story swapping takes place, often over a round or three of adult beverages. One of the topics that has come up recently revolved around the sport class of UTVs and where were see things shaping up. More than one editor stated that if he were to go out and buy a new pure-sport UTV, he’d pick the Textron Off-Road Wildcat XX hands down. That says something about this machine for sure.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

The XX is one of those machines we weren’t sure we’d actually see hit production. We all knew it was in the works before the merging of Textron and Arctic Cat. We also knew that Textron was working on an extreme performance machine of their own. Luckily those two machines were merged as well and we got the XX. It is a very good, well-thought out machine, too. It is powered by a 998cc inline three-cylinder, four-stroke, naturally-aspirated motor that is very familiar to anyone who has driven a Yamaha YXZ. The motor is also used in Arctic Cat snowmobiles through a partnership with Yamaha. In the XX form, it produces 125 horsepower and feeds a CVT transmission with a TEAM Industries clutch and closed-loop electronic fuel injection. Is there a turbo option coming? Have we even spotted one somewhere? Maybe.

Through a partnership with Robby Gordon, the Wildcat XX features a trophy-truck inspired suspension system utilizing front A-Arms with unequal length top to bottom. The rear system uses a trailing arm setup that is directly inspired by the leading off-road racers. This combination reduces changes in the track width by up to 40-percent in the front and an astounding 80-percent in the rear when compared to what the competition is currently doing. This gives the XX unmatched stability and control, which we experienced firsthand. The shocks are FOX 2.5 Podium QS3 Shocks with Bottom-Out Control. These are an excellent choice for this machine with a solid feel throughout the full 18-inches of front and rear travel. We hammered it through some of the most serious whoops we’ve ever driven through and the action is as good as we’ve experienced. This is one of those machines that the harder you drive it, the more fun it is. That is more than enough reason to get this machine on our list of best UTVs.

CAN-AM MAVERICK SPORT 1000R

Can-Am has been working hard to impress the UTV world with some great new models. They turned the industry on its ear with the X3 lineup and the recent overhaul of the Maverick line with the Trail and the new Maverick Sport keeps things interesting for sure. The 100-horsepower Maverick Sport 1000R is about as much fun on the trails as you can have. It combines crisp power delivery with a comfortable cockpit and amazing suspension action into a machine that you’re going to want to have in your garage, if only long enough to gas up so you can go at it again.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

As you would expect from a Can-Am, the Sport is powered by a 976cc Rotax V-Twin engine. The 1000R produces an intense 100hp. It borrows from the X3 brother with large air intakes, oversized radiators and an oversized Donaldson airbox from the Maverick X3. It also gets a boost from a specialized high-performance exhaust line and muffler, an additional CVT intake and the same CVT driven pulley from the Maverick X3. It will get up and move with ease, pushing you back into your seat should you really stomp on it, and who wouldn’t want to do that?

The Maverick Sport uses double A-Arm front suspension and Torsional Trailing Arm (TTA) rear suspension. FOX 2.0 Podium shocks provide the shock duties with the front having 11.5-inches of travel and the rear shocks offering 12-inches of travel. Like we saw with last year’s Maverick Trail, the Sport geometry positions the shocks at the outermost corners of the machine. This design gives the chassis more stability and improves handling by reducing the load on the sway bars that are built into the front and rear systems. Add this to the longer 90.6-inch wheelbase of the Sport and you’ve got a great handling suspension system. One fact we really like about this machine is how well it tracks in rough terrain. While some machines in this class will start swapping at the rear end, the Sport doesn’t. It manages to stay straighter long and with less driver input, letting you focus on the trail ahead a little more. There is a lot less pucker-factor when getting on the gas in harsh terrain. Dual sway bars help a lot, too. Combine this excellent power output, with great handling and suspension, as well as the comfortable Ergo-Lok cockpit, and you’ll see why we added the Maverick Sport 1000R to this list.

POLARIS RANGER XP 1000 CREW

Polaris has been doing it right for a long time, and the newly redesigned Ranger XP 1000 Crew is no exception. Last year when they released the completely redesigned XP 1000 with over 100 consumer suggested improvements and refinements, we hoped they would pass those along to the Crew machine. They didn’t disappoint us. Polaris redesigned the Crew from the frame up to be the class-leading, six passenger utility/recreation machine.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

They started with a single-spar, one-piece mainframe that adds rigidity and capability to the machine. This bumped the towing capacity up to 2,500 pounds and overall payload capacity up to 1,750 pounds. You can tow more and carry more without overtaxing the machine. There is 11-inches of wheel travel at all four corners and 13-inches of ground clearance thanks to the revised suspension and the new 27-inch tires from Maxxis. They completely redesigned the looks of the machine to match the three-seat version, and most are either drawn to the sleeker appearance, or they hate it. We happen to like it. Polaris also redid the entire interior with thicker, plusher seating, a revised dash and driver-focused controls. There is an increase in interior storage and adding accessories is now easier than ever thanks to a redesigned electrical system that allows for essentially plug-and-play use. Installing a winch now takes 30 minutes as opposed to several hours.

The engine is a 999cc ProStar twin-cylinder, four-stroke that produces a rated 82 horsepower. Polaris took what was already the benchmark for a quiet running machine and made it smoother. You really notice it in the longer Crew version, too. This is a very capable machine for work and play, with strong trail manners and serious utility grunt for getting things done. It is a favorite of ours and an easy pick for this list.

CFMOTO ZFORCE 1000 EPS LX

Some people are shocked by the amount of nice things we have to say about the CFMOTO machines. They like to imply that it is driven by advertising dollars over credibility. We get it. There is always going to be that cloud hanging out there of questionable journalistic integrity. Let’s go ahead and clear the air right now – We would never allow advertising to dictate what we say about a machine or product. There are two factors that get the CFMOTO ZFORCE 1000 on this list, and two factors alone. It is a quality machine that we have enjoyed driving a lot, and it is a machine that is selling very well throughout Canada. We’re pretty confident that sales will increase in the U.S., too as the CFMOTO dealer base in that country grows.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

The CFMOTO ZFORCE 1000 EPS LX is powered by a 962.6cc V-twin, eight-valve, liquid-cooled, four-stroke motor with a 91x74mm bore and stroke and a 10.6:1 compression ratio. It has a a Bosch electronic fuel injection system and ignition. The CFMOTO motor is very torquey and fun to drive, producing 60.5 ft/lbs of torque at 6,200 rpm. It’s especially noticeable when you’re in some tighter terrain and you chop on the throttle. Horsepower is rated at 80hp. It’s not tops in the 60-inch class, but its close and it’s a fun machine to drive. We’re all about having fun.

Suspension wise, the CFMOTO has dual wishbone setups front and back with gas-charged shocks that have independent rebound and compression adjustments. The front has 283mm of travel and the rear has 280mm. It’s not the smoothest in the class, but it’s not the worst by a long shot. CFMOTO adds stainless steel bumpers and exhaust. CFMOTO adds mirrors, turn signals and a horn, as well as a 3,000-pound rated winch to the front of the ZFORCE. It is nice to see these accessories come as standard equipment, as they are things they often get added at additional cost at the dealership. Competitive pricing, strong sales and a commitment to the market, along with being a fun machine to drive, make this machine an easy pick for our list. Drive one yourself and you’ll see why.
