MARIETTA, Ga. – September 15, 2021 – Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, announces the majority of their Proven Off-Road ATV and Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicles for model year 2022, highlighted by the new high-performing, extremely capable Wolverine RMAX2 1000 Sport, based off the best-in-class RMAX 1000 platform to further redefine the recreational SxS segment.

Every Yamaha SxS for the world is built with pride and Assembled in the USA at Yamaha’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Newnan, Georgia, which recently reached a historic manufacturing milestone, celebrating its 4-millionth vehicle produced. The 2022 models unveiled today include:

New 2022 Wolverine RMAX2 1000 Sport

2022 RMAX2 1000 and RMAX4 1000

2022 Wolverine X2 and Wolverine X4

2022 Viking and Viking VI

“The Wolverine RMAX 1000 is redefining recreational off-roading by providing unmatched comfort, capability, and confidence-inspiring performance,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s motorsports marketing manager. “This year, we’re expanding the Wolverine line with a new RMAX2 1000 Sport variation with added user-benefits, including another level of suspension adjustability for personalized handling and performance.”

2022 Wolverine RMAX 1000: The Ultimate Off-Road Adventure Machine

Wolverine RMAX 1000 models radiate dominance, powered by an advanced 999cc twin-cylinder engine housed in an optimized chassis built for next-level capability, extreme terrainability, and remarkable rigidity in two- and four-seat configurations. Power and engine braking in the RMAX 1000 can be tailored for a variety of off-road situations with Yamaha’s D-Mode in LE, XT-R, and Sport models (pre-wired and available as a Yamaha Genuine Accessory in RMAX 1000 R-Spec versions) via the Yamaha Chip-Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) system. Yamaha’s D-Mode offers three power delivery settings to match the driver’s mindset and trail conditions: “Crawl” for smooth throttle control and full engine braking in slow-speed, technical driving situations, “Trail” with linear throttle response for a fun, relaxed ride with full engine braking, and “Sport” with a quick throttle response and optimized engine braking for an overall aggressive, fast-paced experience. To further match each unique terrain and driving style, all three D-Mode settings utilize the RMAX1000’s full engine power and 8,500 rpm redline.

The new 2022 Wolverine RMAX2 1000 Sport brings a whole new level of performance to sport-minded drivers, featuring new adjustable FOX 2.0 shocks designed to deliver quality damping feel at higher speeds, without sacrificing low-speed comfort. The new shocks include 24 clicks of high- and low-speed compression adjustment, dual springs, and a crossover coupling for adjustable pre-load, offering a sportier handling feel with increased high-speed bottoming resistance. The RMAX2 1000 Sport retains its best-in-class 13.8-inches of ground clearance, 14.2-inches of front, and 16.9-inches of rear suspension travel for ultimate capability in nearly any terrain.

In addition to new sport-inspired color, graphics, and seat cover design, the RMAX2 1000 Sport dons a “square” tire setup (same size front and rear) with new 30-inch GBC Terra Master 10-ply rated radial tires for versatile riding options and rugged durability. Featuring a unique asymmetrical design with each side different than the other, the Terra Masters offer contrasting ride and handling characteristics, depending on the setup. “Side A,” the stock setup, offers a larger void ratio with horizontal lugs for soft to intermediate terrain, increasing forward acceleration and enhanced braking. “Side B” offers a smaller void ratio with circumferential grooves for improved grip in the corners and a greater contact patch on intermediate to hard off-road surfaces.

Further Wolverine RMAX2 1000 enhancements include new 14-inch cast aluminum color-matched beadlock wheels on Sport and XT-R models – the first factory-installed beadlock wheels on a Wolverine – for a unique, durable, and functional design with aggressive styling. RMAX 1000 XT-R vehicles now have the factory-installed SSV audio system, with second-row speakers added to the RMAX4 1000 LE versions (R-Spec and Sport models are pre-wired for the Yamaha Genuine Accessory audio kit), and the RMAX4 1000 R-Spec now comes with a suntop.

There are so many sweet UTVs on the market, it can be hard to pick one, right? You walk into the dealership and it’s like being a kid walking into the toy store – how can you decide on just one? We have the same problem, so we wanted to offer some help. We selected five UTVs from various segments, our personal favorites, as our picks for our top 5 UTVs for 2021. Think of it as our way of pushing you in the right direction. Of course, you really can’t go wrong with any of the newest models, so there’s plenty of wiggle room to this list.

Polaris RZR Pro XP Ultimate

There are so many RZR models from Polaris, and we like them all. However, if we had to pick one, we’d of course go with the flagship model. The Pro comes loaded with a 925cc turbo-powered twin cylinder engine. It now pumps out 181 horsepower and is fed through fuel injection. Polaris keeps refining their True On-Demand All-Wheel Drive system and the Pro has their latest Isolated Xtreme Performance version that works optimally with the power characteristics of the motor and how you would use the machine. The Ultimate package gives you fox 2.5 Live valve shocks with Dynamix 2.0 active suspension that self-adjust the valving by the microsecond as you drive, adapting to your style and the terrain. If you’ve never used this type of suspension, you must, and once you do, you won’t want to go back. This is easily the finest RZR we’ve driven and the interior is superbly comfortable. The ROPS and 6-point harness make it safer too, meaning this is a winner for sure.

Going along with Yamaha’s reputation for durability is their ability to go anywhere. Yamaha makes machines that are perfect for serious exploration, and the new Wolverine RMAX is a machine we’re very excited about for 2021. These machines perform as well as they look, with a 999cc liquid-cooled twin-cylinder motor and dual throttle body fuel injection. Of course, the motor runs out through Yamaha’s legendary Ultramatic V-belt transmission. Fox QS-3 shocks handle suspension. The XT-R package comes with a Warn winch, and 30-inch Maxxis Carnivore tires. The drive mode system is really cool, with Sport, Trail and Crawl modes, and the Wolverine comes with Yamaha’s Adventure Pro system built in with GPS and more. If you’re drawn to places no one else can go, this is the machine for you.

Honda Talon 1000X Live Valve

Honda brings over the Fox Live Valve suspension system from the 4 seater to the 2-up for 2021 and we’re pretty excited about it. The Talon is a super fun machine to drive and is a machine we’re quite fond of. It is very Honda, in that they don’t do things the same way the other manufacturers do. The biggest thing you’ll find is the DCT dual-Clutch transmission, which we are huge fans of. You can drive it automatic or manual mode and this gives you amazing options for how you tackle the terrain. And engine braking is about as good as it gets. The Honda runs a 999cc Parallel twin motor the Honda live vale system is, in our opinion, one of if not the best of the active suspension systems going thanks, in part, to the Bosch controller, Fox shocks and Honda engineering. This is a fun, naturally-aspirated sport UTV and one of our picks for five best.

Can-Am Defender Pro Limited

The Can-Am Defender line has been one of the best utility/recreation machines out there. For those looking for a serious work machine, the 2021 Defender Pro Limited has it all. For starters, how about the six-foot, power-dumping cargo bed with additional storage underneath? Think of all the stuff you can fit in the bed? But as they say, wait, there’s more. The Limited package adds a full cab with a premium roof, glass front and rear windshield, wiper kit, 7.6-inch digital display with keypad and a heating and air-conditioning system, so you’re comfortable inside the machine regardless of the weather conditions. Add in the usual Defender features like a 976cc Rotax V-twin, Pro-Torq Transmission and the XT front bumper with winch. This is a machine waiting to get something done.

CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 EPS Sport

All you need to do is take a ride in this new ZForce 950 to see how impressive it is. Besides looking completely different than anything else on the trail, this machine is a lot of fun to drive. It has a 963cc motor with a Bosch ignition and fuel injection system. It runs through a CVTech-IBC belt drive and comes with a new Sport Mode that increases acceleration performance when you take off. It comes with a horn and turn signals integrated into the machine as well as a 3,500lb winch, mirrors and a roof. The best part is the value. It comes with a lower price tag than much of the competition and a 5-year warranty. That’s pretty hard to beat.

As I write this, there are new 2021 model UTVs being unveiled by the manufacturers, and if you look at the price tags on some of them, it is stunning how much one can spend on a UTV. I saw one that costs about the same as some new trucks! What is the average person to do? While there are some very expensive UTVs on the market, there are also some pretty sweet deals out there for UTV buyers looking for a capable machine that won’t break the bank. We picked five of what we feel are the best UTVs on a budget that will work to fulfill your needs.

Polaris RZR S 900

Who doesn’t want a RZR? There’s a reason the name is synonymous with sport UTVs. The cost of a RZR can be pretty intimidating to the buyer, however, there are some alternatives you should consider. One of our favorite machines around here is the RZR S 900. Yes, it’s a little more money than the standard RZR 900, or it’s baby brother, the RZR 570, but for just a little more cha-ching, you get a lot more pizzazz! The machine has more than enough power for a spirited trail ride thanks to the DOHC 875cc ProStar twin-cylinder engine that produces a pleasing 75 horsepower. The RZR 900 motor has been around for some time and has proven to be a reliable and fun power plant. It has electronic fuel injection and decent engine braking, a nice feature for a trail machine. It gets that power to the wheels through Polaris’ PVT automatic transmission. Like just about every Polaris machine, the RZR S 900 has their True On-Demand AWD system to keep you rolling along. When in AWD, the machine senses wheel spin and transfers power to other wheels to keep you from getting stuck. This system doesn’t use differential locks, leaving that to the machine to decide when drive axles need to be spinning. It works well and is something Polaris has been using for years.

The main reason we like the RZR S over the 50-inch model is the added width and stability. There’s nothing wrong with the 50-inch machine. It’s great for hitting the trails that have that width limitation, and it pretty much identical to the S. However, the added width of the 60-inch RZR S 900 gives you a lot more comfort, stability and confidence to carry speed through the corners. That’s important because, let’s face it, you buy a RZR to go fast. Other than that, you have decent suspension with dual A-arms all around and Fox 2.0 Podium shocks. It’s really a great buy for the trail rider.

Honda Pioneer 700

The Pioneer 700 was Honda’s second foray into UTVs. The first, the Big Red, didn’t quite hit the mark, but we really like the Pioneer. At first glance, you may thing the Pioneer to be a strictly work UTV, and it does a great job at that, but it is also a truly fun trail machine, too. The standard model seats two and has a dumping cargo box. There are some things about this machine that are definitely Honda. The company doesn’t do things the same way other companies do, but that’s fine. Honda has a great reputation for dependability and durability, so they can keep doing what they do. We like it.

The Pioneer runs on a 675cc single-cylinder engine fed through electronic fuel injection. The transmission is definitely different, being a three-speed automotive-style automatic with a hydraulic torque converter. The deluxe models, which run a little more, give you paddle shifters and the option to run in manual shift mode, or automatic. The Pioneer operates in 2WD, 4WD and 4WD with Dif Lock. We can tell you that the combination of the transmission and the drivetrain makes this 700-class UTV pull like a MUCH bigger machine. If you’re in the market for a trail and utility UTV, and want something a little different than the rest, the Pioneer 700 is a stellar option.

Yamaha Viking

The Viking? I can just about see the groan on your face. The Viking isn’t very exciting, or so it would seem, but it actually is for several reasons. Sure, the Viking is a little long in the tooth, but it remains a great selling unit for Yamaha and we are reminded that we like it every time we drive one. For starters, you’d be hard pressed to find a more reliable machine out there. One of the many great characteristics of Yamaha is the solid construction. They rarely, if ever, break down. And then, it’s often due to neglect on the owner’s part. It is powered by a 686cc, SOHC single-cylinder engine mated to the best CVT transmission on the market. The Ultramatic V-belt tranny is oil-immersed and under constant tension, so there is very little belt wear.

The cab features three bucket seats with a 5-degree recline to the middle seat so everyone isn’t rubbing shoulders together. The cargo bed is nicely sized, with a steel floor section for durability. The Viking is Yamaha’s utility UTV, but it has really nice trail manners. Engine braking is really good on the machine and Yamaha has worked very hard to reduce noise in the cab to make the ride more enjoyable. You can pick one up for around the same as other brand’s mid-size machine, giving you a full-size, capable trail and work machine at a great price.

CF Moto ZForce 500 LX

Probably the best deal going in a 50-inch trail machine is the ZForce 500 LX. You could save a few bucks going with the less-equipped non-LX model, but the added things in the LX or really necessary for the trails, and you will most likely end up adding all of them anyway. These are nice-looking machines with a 495cc engine producing 37.5 HP. It uses a CVTech belt transmission and our experiences with these machines have proven them to be reliable and dependable. They come with a five-year limited warranty, too. Nice touch! The driveline operates in 2WD, 4WD and has an electronic locking differential.

Other standard features we like include the 14-inch aluminum wheels and digital dashboard display. The ZForce also has LED headlights with turn signals, which are required on some trail systems. Side mirrors come standard too. The LX package adds power steering, which you’ll find you want on rugged trails, especially one with rocks or tree roots. It also adds the all-important 3,000lb. winch to help get you out of trouble.

Can-Am Maverick Trail

One of our favorite trail machines since it’s introduction, the Can-Am Maverick Trail is a stellar machine for having fun, and it can be picked up for a great price. We did some extensive driving in the mountains with this machine and appreciate the nimble handling and balance the machine has. It is powered by an 800-class, 799.9cc Rotax V-twin that pumps out a pleasing 51 horsepower.

This is a lower-priced machine aimed at the trail crowd, but the design benefited from developing the bigger, more powerful X3 machines in the Can-Am stable. The drive-by-wire iTC Intelligent Throttle Control and fuel injection system helps feed the motor in a predictable and performance-spirted way. The Quick-Response System CVT-belt transmission has an electronic belt protector and a high-flow air vent that came right off the X3. The iTC system gives you SPORT and ECO modes to give you more power when you want it, or better fuel economy for longer trail rides. There is an electronic engine braking system to help you descend bigger inclines, a feature we’ve put to the test repeatedly.

The big take away

There are many UTVs you can buy that will do pretty much everything you’d want, while not causing you to go into severe debt. What good is a shiny, new UTV if you don’t have the money to put gas in it to go riding, right? Are there less expensive machine on the market? Sure, however, we went looking for ones we consider to be the best for your money. One major thing to keep in mind. One of the issues we often see with people looking for a UTV on a budget, is they will find machines with price tags too good to be true. You know what I’m talking about – brands you’ve never heard of before at prices too low to believe. Trust me, my friend – you don’t want to go that route. You often can’t find parts for these machines and breakdowns happen quite often. Spend a little more up front to save the headaches down the road. After all, you want to be out on the trails, not sitting at home waiting for the repair shop to call.

Inspired by the Wolverine X2 and X4’s proven engine, Yamaha scaled up the power in the RMAX 1000 models, creating a new best-in-class, high-octane 999cc DOHC, eight-valve, parallel twin-cylinder engine, revving to an intense 8,500 rpm redline. Power is delivered through Yamaha’s reliable Ultramatic transmission – the most advanced and durable CVT drive system available – redesigned to accommodate the increase in power and maintain constant belt-tension while idling or engaged in high-rpm and high-torque situations. After countless hours of extreme durability testing and decades of proven performance, CVT belt concerns are eliminated with the unprecedented and industry-exclusive Yamaha 10-Year Belt Warranty.

Power and engine-braking are maximized in various off-road situations with the combination of Yamaha’s reliable On-Command system featuring two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive with limited-slip, and full-differential lock. For the first time ever in a SxS, the new Yamaha D-Mode offers three optimized power delivery settings to match the terrain and driver mindset while still utilizing the full power of the class-leading 999cc engine via the YCC-T system. D-Mode provides the following three intuitive options at the turn of a dial in the driver’s cockpit:

Trail Mode: Smooth acceleration, linear throttle response, and full engine braking for a fun, relaxed ride.

Sport Mode: Powerful acceleration, quick throttle-response, and smooth engine-braking for a sportier experience on wide-open trails, dunes, and more.

Crawl Mode: Smooth acceleration, moderate throttle response, and full engine-braking to methodically traverse technical situations, such as rock crawling or mud sections, with ease.

The proven D-Mode system is equipped on every Wolverine RMAX 1000 XT-R and LE model. All standard models are preset to Trail Mode from the factory and can be upgraded by installing the Yamaha Genuine Accessory D-Mode system. Yamaha’s Speed Management System (SMS) is equipped on all RMAX4 1000 models and the RMAX2 1000 LE. SMS seamlessly limits the vehicle’s top speed to 25 mph by simply turning a removable key, making it ideal for work sites and other specialized operating conditions.

Every Proven Off-Road Wolverine RMAX2 1000 model is equipped with massive 30-inch tires in a “square” setup (same size front and rear), while Wolverine RMAX4 1000 models feature 29-inch tires in a staggered setup (narrower front), all of which are set on stylish and rugged 14-inch aluminum wheels and developed specifically to each model for precise steering-character and a comfortable, yet durable sidewall. XT-R and LE editions are equipped with high-quality radial construction tires for an enhanced look and feel, with the Maxxis Carnivore on the RMAX2 1000 and a Yamaha-exclusive Maxxis Carnage on the RMAX4 1000. Both beds feature rugged steel tie-down points to securely fasten payloads.

MAX COMFORT: Stout, New Chassis with Auto-Style Cab Comfort, Smooth Running Engine, Adventure Pro

The Wolverine RMAX 1000 lineup’s interior design is reimagined to provide the most comfort features experienced in the cabin of a SxS, minimizing fatigue and maximizing fun on all-day rides. Vehicle mass is centralized with a low-mounted rear driveshaft for a serene and quiet-performing driveline, further silenced with robust spiral and helical gears. The smooth-running 999cc parallel twin is positioned in an inclined layout with a 270-degree cross-plane crankshaft and counter-balancer, while engine noise and vibration are kept to a minimum through its rubber-mounted system. The high-quality, aggressive-sounding exhaust is precisely tuned for all-day riding enjoyment, with the rigid high-volume air intake and accumulator aiding in added noise reduction for increased cabin comfort. A new steering rack and Yamaha’s proven speed- and torque-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) system has also been adopted for light-effort steering, balanced feedback, and precise steering-character to further reduce vibration and driver fatigue.

The Wolverine RMAX 1000 line delivers superior contact-to-ground feel with impressive suspension travel and geometry for supreme articulation. New FOX 2.0 QS3 shocks are mounted to wide-arc a-arms, allowing throughout any operating speed, high-quality damping and maximum ground clearance, measuring a class-leading 13.8-inches on the RMAX2 1000 and 13.4-inches on the RMAX4 1000. The RMAX4 1000 additionally offers an impressive 14.2-inches of front suspension travel with 13.3-inches in the rear, and the RMAX2 1000 reigns supreme, providing best-in-class suspension travel at 14.2-inches up front and a massive 16.9-inches in the rear. To tailor the suspension for different riding styles and situations, the QS3 shocks feature three positions, adjustable without the need for tools, set for relaxed driving, trail-riding, or aggressive sport-performance. For a premium experience in a wide variety of terrain, LE models feature FOX iQS shock technology, putting suspension damping setting adjustments in the cockpit, allowing drivers to choose preferred levels manually by toggling a three-way rocker switch on the dashboard. The three choices include Comfort, Medium, or Firm, and are controlled by a Bosch ECU and IP67-rated components – an industry-first on stock SxS – for Proven Off-Road reliability and performance in any terrain, wet or dry.

The all-new three-piece front doors allow for easy entrance and exit with an inner-steel structure, robust inner-door handles for smooth operation in even the harshest conditions, soft touchpoints, and prewiring for full Yamaha Genuine Accessory speaker integration. New seats provide a quality look and feel while new easy-to-adjust, six-position seatbelts offer increased comfort for all occupants. Fitment is further tailored with increased fore / aft adjustment in the driver’s seat compared to previous Wolverine models for added roominess and accommodation for taller drivers.

The cabin offers a luxurious, automotive-type design for premium comfort and style beyond the competitors’ hard plastic interiors. The Proven Off-Road Wolverine RMAX 1000 line boasts industry-exclusive soft touchpoints, including a rubber over-molded steering wheel with 17 degrees of tilt adjustment, an all-new soft-touch, quick-adjust passenger handhold, padded knee areas, and soft center-console lid. Confidence-inspiring controls have been integrated into the dash and center-console for a natural, automotive-feel, including a blue LED dash meter, sealed console and glove boxes, driver and passenger storage mats, an open-gate shifter, soft-touch parking brake lever, powered USB-port on Adventure Pro-equipped models, and two or six cupholders on the two- and four-seat configurations, respectively. XT-R and LE variations are also equipped with stylish cut-and-sew seats, a rearview center-mount mirror, color-matched interior, chrome inlays on the shifter and brake lever, all-new blue LED interior floor and center-console lighting, and all-new blue LED-backlit On-Command, Headlight, Winch, D-Mode, and iQS switches.

The popular Yamaha Adventure Pro powered by Magellan, an advanced all-weather adventure tool with a seven-inch display and GPS functionality, allows Yamaha owners to explore further with even more capability and confidence, as well as the ability to share experiences with friends and family, and is now installed from the factory in RMAX 1000 XT-R and LE models with full in-dash integration. For a definitive and secure fit and finish, the Adventure Pro is in a lockable housing, yet is still portable and removable for maximum exploration and adventure-sharing. Standard RMAX2 1000 and RMAX4 1000 models feature an added storage compartment with a Yamaha-branded cover, which can be replaced with an in-dash Yamaha Adventure Pro by ordering a kit available on ShopYamaha.com.

MAX CONFIDENCE: Proven Off-Road Durability, Reliability, and Superior Build-Quality

The Wolverine RMAX 1000 line’s next-generation styling has an imposing stance at 64-inches wide and sleek, yet aggressive design for an overall unstoppable look only furthered by the models’ best-in-class suspension travel, burly tires, and 86.7-inch wheelbase on the RMAX2 1000 or 90.2-inch wheelbase on the RMAX4 1000. Stealthy new front LED headlights and marker lights, along with head-turning color combinations, give the RMAX 1000 lineup a distinctive and advanced look above all others on the trail.

For maximum confidence, the RMAX 1000 line features fully-welded steel skid plates and a replaceable front plastic skid plate to tackle terrain without fear of damaging components in the most vital areas. For tight situations and added protection while traversing trail obstacles, the lineup comes standard with welded-on rear wheel protectors extending from the bottom of the frame to reduce obstacle contact with the rear tires. Solidifying owner confidence, all Yamaha SxS frames feature a two-stage coating process completed at the factory. First, an automotive-style, full-submersion e-coat is applied to ensure complete coverage, even inside the frame rails and tubes, followed by an exceptionally durable powder coat process.

New stealthy and advanced LED headlights give the Proven Off-Road Wolverine RMAX 1000 models a unique, sinister look and character while shining the ideal wide-beam pattern during off-road adventures. The 7.6-watt LED mono-focus low-beams constantly light up the trail, while the 15.2-watt reflector-type high-beams are for maximum illumination while driving in lowlight conditions. In the rear, the integrated LED taillights, brake lights, and class-exclusive reverse lights retain trail visibility and enhance lighting while backing up.

A robust front bumper comes standard on RMAX 1000 models and includes two welded-steel trailering tie-down points, an integrated winch plate, accessory add-on brush guard, and accessory pod light mounting brackets. XT-R and LE versions are also equipped with a factory-installed, heavy-duty WARN VRX 4,500-pound winch featuring IP68-rated waterproofing, all-metal construction for durability, a three-stage steel planetary gear train for smooth and reliable operation, and an easy-to-turn clutch dial. Making winch installation simpler on non-equipped models, Yamaha provided existing mounting points and prewiring to a dedicated, integrated switch located on the dash.

For many, an ATV or a UTV is considered a working tool like any other tool that fills our toolboxes or workshops. Consequently, they must be able to complete the jobs they were intended for when the need arises. Malfunction can cause loss of time and worry that we strive to avoid at all costs. “Time is money” as the popular saying goes, and equipping yourself with quality tools is priceless. The majority of off-road vehicle enthusiasts are somewhat caught off guard when it is time to list the characteristics of the work vehicle par excellence from the manufacturer Yamaha – the Viking. It may not be the machine that comes to mind for some when it is time to make a list of utility-oriented UTVs, but nevertheless, it is worthy of giving it our full consideration. The Viking can work!

2020 Yamaha Viking Ranch Edition:

The overall look of the vehicle that has been made available to us by Yamaha Canada and its director, François Morneau, is much different compared to Vikings we’ve ridden before. The exterior color and the choice of contrasting colors assigned to the bench seat are worthy of a luxury car or truck. They are close to the colors favored by the horse lovers and this is probably related to its name ” Ranch Edition.” It is possible that Yamaha is specifically targeting this market, but we believe that a majority of enthusiasts will be charmed by this theme and colors compared to conventional utility UTVs. It’s a sharp-looking ride.

Its body, even if it has been the same for several years, crosses time well and its shape gives a well-defined identity to the 2020 Yamaha Viking. Its solid front bumper will, however, be able to protect from an impact to preserve body integrity.

Space for 3 occupants

3 spacious seats can accommodate a pilot and 2 passengers with ease. The driver’s seat is independent to provide 3-position adjustment using a tool. We would have appreciated another way to allow faster changes to the driver’s seat. The steering wheel is fixed and does not allow adjustment to individual preferences. These are our two biggest quirks for the overall fit of the machine. The Viking benefits from new, easier-to-use 3-point belts, which offer excellent support without being annoying.

An adjustable grab bar for passengers allows them to have the necessary support when riding in rough terrain. To increase the safety aspect, the designers added huge pads on each side. This helps keep you and your passengers in the machine in case of an accident. It should be mentioned that they are not in the way while entering or leaving the vehicle. In fact, we almost forget their presence because they are so discreet. This is a point that is worth mentioning, because in a utility vehicle, back and forth entries and exits will be a regular task.

2020 Yamaha Viking Ranch Edition Review

The doors raised questions. Their injection molded products are flawless and aesthetically very pleasing. However, our question lies rather in their height. We would have appreciated an extra effort by the designers to create doors that provide increased protection against the elements. In return, they do a good job of preventing water and mud from entering the passenger compartment through the parts they cover. They could just stand to be bigger.

The digital instrumentation is located in the center of the dashboard and in my opinion it requires a bit of effort to read the information. I briefly had to take my eyes off the road to read the gauges. However, it offers all the necessary information required for proper operation and to take advantage of the Yamaha Viking 2020. New this year, a new audible warning in the event of engine overheating, which sounds when it is about to reach maximum operating temperature.

The engine

Yamaha offers a new generation 686cc single-cylinder for its utility vehicle. Is it suitable for doing the hard work? The question is legitimate because on paper, we could be disappointed with this choice of engine, which is probably below what the competition offers. Our questioning ended when we took the Viking to task. Even if it is not the most powerful, it is intended to perform tasks requiring torque at low speed and it is in this range that the Viking excels. Would we have preferred to have more horsepower? Quite probably, but this engine has proven itself and its reliability is worth well beyond a higher power engine. It’s all about how much power you actually need versus what you think you want. The Viking gets the job done. Period.

A very remarkable fact, this single-cylinder engine is very economical to use and it offers a very long range. Its 36.7-liter fuel tank provides almost infinite kilometers for its user and makes its purchase highly appreciated.

2020 Yamaha Viking Ranch Edition Review

The combination of this engine and the famous Ultramatic transmission, exclusive to Yamaha, uses a centrifugal clutch that maintains constant tension on the belt. This characteristic makes it possible to reduce premature wear due to the fact that it does not slip during its engagement. This UTV is known for its smooth clutch action and its 4-wheel drive system (On-Command), which allows the driver to quickly select between 2 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive limited slip and a 4-wheel drive system with fully locked differential.
During a stop, it is strongly advised to apply the handbrake, because the ”Park” selector does not exist. Otherwise, the Yamaha Viking could move away from the place you previously parked.

Its towing capacity of 1,500lbs is proof of its capacities to carry out the work. Its dump box with a maximum capacity of 600lbs allows the transportation and loading of everything necessary to do the job efficiently. Yamaha has added a rubberized non-slip mat at the bottom of the dump box to protect it and to reduce the movement of the objects it carries. Four tie-down points allow loads to be securely fixed. A hydraulic aid assists the tilting operation to avoid a rapid spillage. The tailgate is of a strength rarely seen in this category. We tested it by adding the weight of two big fellows and it did not bend a millimeter. However, the two locks that hold the tailgate in place displeased us greatly. These are likely to wear out quickly over time with their steel design. We would have appreciated a fastening system which is similar to what we find on our everyday pickup trucks.

Exemplary EPS

The electric power steering of Yamaha side by side vehicles impresses us at every opportunity that we have to drive them. Even at low speed, we were able to manipulate the steering wheel with one finger. This is really one of the best things about this vehicle. And it is more appreciable on the Yamaha Viking because of its primary duty – work. The assistance is also sensitive to the vehicle’s speed, meaning it is increased at low speed and it is decreased when the speed increases, thus optimizing vehicle control. This progressive feedback makes it possible to feel the trail and to improve the driving experience. Yamaha invented power steering for ATVs and UTVs and it shows.

2020 Yamaha Viking Ranch Edition Review

Suspension

The nitrogen-charged shock absorbers that equip the Yamaha Viking offer a very interesting and surprising compromise for this type of vehicle. At first glance, we didn’t think they’d be stiff enough, but they work. Indeed, the suspension is very user-friendly and the designers have found the happy compromise for utilitarian and sometimes recreational use.

Combined with all that mentioned above, its chassis and short wheelbase allow handling in tight places. We can easily put it in a dense forest where another vehicle could not go. Its precise direction offers a short turn radius also greatly helps to reach environments that no other could reach otherwise.

2020 Yamaha Viking Ranch Edition Review

Globally, the 2020 Viking Ranch Edition is a great vehicle with reliability linked directly to the Yamaha name. It is sincerely not the most powerful in its category, but its purchase is rather intended as a long-term investment. It is a Swiss army knife equipped with all the paraphernalia and skills to fulfill every task you can throw at it. And as you’d expect from Yamaha, it gets it done.

TORONTO, ON. – September 4, 2019 – Yamaha Motor Canada, introduces all-new Special Edition models for select Proven Off-Road 2020 ATV and Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicles. Boasting superior capability, comfort, and confidence in a variety of terrain, the new Special Edition machines are equipped with stout new radial tires, a WARN winch, advanced suspension, new painted Titanium Bronze / Tactical Black colour scheme, and more.

“Yamaha continues to update the Proven Off-Road ATV and SxS platforms with the new Special Edition Wolverine, YXZ, and Grizzly models, taking trail performance and showroom appeal to the next level with added features to increase real world terrainability,” said Chris Poirier, Yamaha’s National Motorsports, Sales Operations.

2020 Wolverine X2 and X4: The Ultimate Recreational Trail-Exploring Machines

The 2020 Wolverine X2 and X4 delivers superior handling, especially on tight, technical trails, combined with Yamaha’s legendary Real World Tough durability and reliability. Smooth, ultra- quiet power comes from an 847-cc twin-cylinder engine, while a compact, nimble chassis allows drivers to navigate tight, technical terrain. Along with new upper and lower rear A-arms to increase suspension travel while minimizing camber changes for improved response in rough terrain, the 2020 Wolverine X2 and X4 now also accommodates “square” – or same-size – accessory tire and wheel setups, in addition to withstanding the added rigor of winching.

Both Wolverine models are versatile and work-ready with a 600-pound-rated bed, donning an automotive-style one-hand-operated tailgate, and impressive 2,000-pound towing capacity. The two-seat Wolverine X2 is equipped with a hydraulic dump bed, while the X4 can seat up to four with industry-exclusive, simple-to-stow full-size rear seats, allowing for expanded cargo capacity when needed.

All-New SE models 2020 Yamaha SxS and ATVs.

Yamaha’s driver-centric Real World Tech features on the Wolverine includes an ultra-reliable and durable Ultramatic continuously variable transmission (CVT), able to accommodate more than 60 pound-feet of torque, dependable driver-controlled On-Command 4WD system, the industry’s foremost speed and torque-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS), and compatibility for the Yamaha Adventure Pro GPS, powered by Magellan.

The Wolverine X2 and X4 in the Special Edition trim is further equipped with new 27-inch GBC Dirt Commander radial tires featuring 8-ply rated construction, increased ground clearance, traction, and durability, a WARN VRX 4500 winch, high-quality graphics and painted bodywork, and KYB piggyback shocks with fully adjustable spring preload, rebound, and high- and low-speed compression damping. The Wolverine X4 Special Edition retains the advanced self-leveling rear shocks to provide a plush ride, as well as help maintain optimized ground clearance based on the terrain and cargo.

2020 YXZ1000R SS: Pure-Sport Fun and Domination from Coast-to-Coast

In the early morning hours of a late February day we awoke to the silence of the Glamis sunrise. The wind was dead, the sandy dunes were rough, and the tribal circle of rental campers began to come alive. It was time to celebrate Yamaha’s latest arsenal of SXS and ATV, but our goal was to get a ride in the most powerful YXZ to date. The word turbo is synonymous with serious power output and in Yamaha’s 2019 model year, the 2019 Yamaha YXZ1000R SS SE gave us a tour of the Imperial Sand Dunes proper for the memory bank.

Although the Turbo YXZ is still only offered in GYTR kit form there are many great changes to the platform to give anyone with a few extra dollars and a hunger for bold power, something to chew on. The very first and potentially most important item of discussion was the fact that Yamaha had reduced the install time as well as cost of the GYTR Turbo kit. The way they had achieved this is that every YXZ1000R engine for 2019 has already had the stronger “turbo approved” connecting rods installed in the engine from the factory. This means that you do not have to open your engine nor does the dealer, which greatly reduces the stress and cost of getting that little pony maker installed. Not to mention it eliminates the potential risk for mistakes that could be catastrophic should the process be done in your home garage.

2019 Yamaha YXZ1000R SS SE Turbo

Another time saver that some may or may not immediately notice would be that the wiring harness on the YXZ is prewired for some of their accessories. This not only keeps install time of electrical accessories to a minimum, but I would say it also helps to keep your wiring harness from getting all cut up when that backyard mechanic decides to “show you how it’s done.” I’d say it also helps when trouble shooting any wiring issue back at the dealer level.

Yamaha had brought several YXZ’s to choose from including a GYTR turbo laden YXZ1000R SS SE with Bighorn tires. For model year 2019 you will find Special Edition models that include virtually all of the same features excluding the two types of shocks. The cage has better upper visibility out the front and entry egress. The FOX shocks vary between color so the team Yamaha blue YXZ has the FOX Podium RC2 2.5 with dual springs and the Ultra White YXZ is outfitted with the FOX Podium X2 2.5 shocks with dual springs and adjustable crossovers. The biggest difference between the two turbo YXZ’s was that one had big paddles and the other, factory installed Big Horn tires. There was a Non-Turbo YXZ with a 28-inch paddle but to keep the results from getting confusing, lets stick with the discussions to SXS’s with Turbos.

2019 Yamaha YXZ1000R SS SE Turbo Review

In hindsight, we could have experienced the Team Yamaha Blue YXZ first, but it did give us a great result by driving the completely outfitted Ultra White version of the YXZ from the start. The Ultra White 2019 Yamaha YXZ 1000R SS SE sat still, almost glaring at the potential drivers. The extra GYTR bling had been strategically installed to give everyone a few grins when staring in its direction. Some of the key or most noticeable accessories on this Ultra White special edition model had to be the 29-inch Sand Slinger paddle tires mounted on KMC bead lock wheels. Combining those traction producing sand tires with the GYTR Turbo kit made this machine the stand out. Yamaha had also installed their Halo light bar on the roof of the SXS as well as some front bumper area lights. To say that this machine looked the part would be an understatement as it really did look aggressive and somewhat menacing when slipping off into the sand straight towards you.

Slipping down into the cab of the Ultra White YXZ it was apparent that the interior had also gotten some special treatment. The list of accessories kept growing as the SSV sound system gave us some time to share our favorite tunes through Bluetooth connectivity. You might remember also that Yamaha had teamed up with Magellan to produce the Adventure Pro system that maps and shares your tracks along with keeping you informed on how your machine is doing in the process. This little mapping device is crucial for those of us that do not get to venture out into the vast desert areas because getting lost here is pretty easy.

2019 Yamaha YXZ1000R SS SE Turbo Review

Strapping into the seat was also a little different as Yamaha had switched out the regular three-point harness for their serious security in the accessory four-point harness kit that comes with the new bracket kit. This bracket kit allows the accessory harness to be mounted low on the new protective structure crossbar behind the seat and it keeps the belts closer together for a more secure fit. By now you also know that the radiator has been moved from the front of the YXZ to the rear center of the passenger compartment directly behind the seating area. This new radiator and location provide the YXZ with 300 percent more cooling for those long days in the heat of your favorite riding area. It is the largest radiator to date for Yamaha. It is also worth mentioning that the heat flowing off the radiator is no longer transferred through the cab across the driver and passenger which makes the riding experience that much better as well.

As for our ride, well it gets pretty interesting. Leaving out of the camp on Gecko road the sand was rough due to the lack of wind over the previous days. The chop kept our FOX X2 suspension working but it didn’t transfer that work into the cab to bad. The X2 series shocks are completely amazing when it comes to soaking up the small stuff not to mention how they really absorb those big g-outs that surprise an eager driver from time to time. It’s a shame that these shocks are not offered on all YXZ models instead of just the Special Edition, but I guess the price would be vastly different as well. The most noticeable item that really goes unnoticed is how seamlessly the turbo blends in the extra power to the driver’s intent. The turbo seems to be very available but not overly rude off the bottom of the pedal. The power is there and getting the YXZ1000R rolling you can feel the progress in forced air as the RPM’s climb. It’s when the mid-range punch rolls in that you know you have a grip on something serious. The power flows well and although it is stout, 60% more power, we did find that the 29-inch Sand Slinger paddle tires soaked a lot of that up when transferring the torque to the sand. In a straight line however, when laying a heavy foot on the gas pedal the power as well as torque is impressively evident and consistently grows as the pedal is dropped to the floor and the engine begins to really scream. Revving an engine to a 10,500-rpm limiter is incredibly exhilarating to say the least.

2019 Yamaha YXZ1000R SS SE Turbo Review

So, our trip through the dunes took us to some of the more popular places and one was an incredible hill climb called Oldsmobile Hill. If you have not visited this area of California, the Imperial Sand Dunes (aka Glamis) has several named locations that should be on the schedule as must see. Oldsmobile is a common spot for drag races and this trip was no different. This group of SXS enthusiasts decided to pit the Yamaha YXZ’s against their siblings to test the overall power results from stock with 28-inch paddles to Turbo with Bighorn tires and then with the YXZ SE model with turbo and 29-inch paddle tires. The results were as expected with the consistent driving in the Ultra White SS SE model YXZ Eking out the others by a fair margin. Launching the YXZ’s up the incredible mountain of sand was enjoyable, but it was time to see just how the package handled the dunes overall.

Riding in Glamis requires some skill and much more importantly, if you’re a flat lander, common sense to follow someone who has been here before. Rolling over or climbing up a large sand dune and cresting the top of the next is exhilarating and having the power to do so makes life in the blinding white sandbox much more fun. The Sand slinger paddles seemed to transfer the brutal power to the ground well and made climbing the dunes easier which is why most choose a paddle tire. These tires also add more ground clearance to the YXZ.

On the flip side, we did get some seat time in the 2019 Team Yamaha Blue YXZ1000R SS SE with the factory installed original Maxxis Big Horn tire and quite frankly, it seemed to be a bit more fun. The Big Horn is a great universal tire (some say one of the best in the industry) and it seems to allow a little better maneuverability overall. Sliding the rear of the YXZ out was a very easy thing to do with the GYTR turbo kit installed. Although these tires are presumably spinning with a bit less traction when standing in the throttle it surely gets the heart racing.

Overall, this latest version of the YXZ1000R SS SE is a great forward leap for Yamaha. These machines are becoming better and better as the years progress and Yamaha has their mind set to Rev your Heart!

It’s a question we get asked all the time, almost as often as we’re asked how people can get a job like ours. While publishing a UTV magazine may seem glamorous and such, it’s a lot of hard work testing, evaluating, photographing and writing about various machines. No the question we get hit with a lot goes like this, “So Mario, which UTV is the best?” Most people generally don’t like my answer, as I replay that it truly depends on what they want the machine to do, and how they intend to make it do it.

There is simply no single best UTV out there. I’m not trying to dodge the question in any way, or downplay anyone’s personal brand preferences, which play a lot into what machines people think are the best. It did, however, really get me to thinking about a list of say, the five best UTVs available at the moment I write this. That I can do. Here are the five best UTVs available right now in no particular order, and what about them puts them on this list.

YAMAHA WOLVERINE X2 R-SPEC

With the introduction of the X4, it was only a matter of months before Yamaha unleashed the revised two-passenger version of the popular Wolverine. The X2 shares the engine and basic chassis of the X4. You get the same ultra-reliable transmission and 847cc parallel twin, fuel injected engine. The rear cargo area is now a full dumping cargo box, giving you more options when it comes time to use the Wolverine for chores. But the great outdoors and adventure is more to the X2’s liking, and it comes pre-wired for Yamaha’s new Adventure Pro GPS system. Like the previous model Wolverine’s the R-SPEC adds piggyback KYB shocks at all four corners. These shocks give a plusher ride and are better equipped for serious adventuring. The R-SPEC models get sun tops and aluminum wheels.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

The Wolverine X2 is a seriously good handling machine with an engine that operates so quietly, you’ll question whether it is really running at times. There are a few key areas that Yamaha rules the industry with. They have the best CVT transmission going, with tremendous belt life. The system shifts smoothly, never fails and you’d honestly have to try very hard to damage it. Yamaha was the first out with power steering, and that is evident with the handling of the X2. This is one of the best-handling adventure machines on the market. It’s not a pure sport machine, but Yamaha isn’t going after the RZR crowd with the Wolverine. If your idea of fun is getting back into country that is difficult to reach, or clawing your way up to the top of a nasty, rutted, wooded hillside, the Wolverine is calling your name.

Yamaha is a firm believer that their products produce the power you can use as opposed to the power you think you need. This is very evident with the X2’s engine. While some bemoan the engine’s power output and tout horsepower figures published by other brands, Yamaha likes to tell people to get behind the wheel and use the machine in the environment it was meant for and then see if the power output works. We can say with certainty that the Yamaha Wolverine X2 has plenty of power for doing what it was intended for and you’ll be totally happy with it. Combine the aspects of power, superb handling and amazing reliability, and you can see how the X2 makes this list with ease.

TEXTRON WILDCAT XX

When a bunch of UTV magazine editors get together for an event, a lot of bench racing and story swapping takes place, often over a round or three of adult beverages. One of the topics that has come up recently revolved around the sport class of UTVs and where were see things shaping up. More than one editor stated that if he were to go out and buy a new pure-sport UTV, he’d pick the Textron Off-Road Wildcat XX hands down. That says something about this machine for sure.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

The XX is one of those machines we weren’t sure we’d actually see hit production. We all knew it was in the works before the merging of Textron and Arctic Cat. We also knew that Textron was working on an extreme performance machine of their own. Luckily those two machines were merged as well and we got the XX. It is a very good, well-thought out machine, too. It is powered by a 998cc inline three-cylinder, four-stroke, naturally-aspirated motor that is very familiar to anyone who has driven a Yamaha YXZ. The motor is also used in Arctic Cat snowmobiles through a partnership with Yamaha. In the XX form, it produces 125 horsepower and feeds a CVT transmission with a TEAM Industries clutch and closed-loop electronic fuel injection. Is there a turbo option coming? Have we even spotted one somewhere? Maybe.

Through a partnership with Robby Gordon, the Wildcat XX features a trophy-truck inspired suspension system utilizing front A-Arms with unequal length top to bottom. The rear system uses a trailing arm setup that is directly inspired by the leading off-road racers. This combination reduces changes in the track width by up to 40-percent in the front and an astounding 80-percent in the rear when compared to what the competition is currently doing. This gives the XX unmatched stability and control, which we experienced firsthand. The shocks are FOX 2.5 Podium QS3 Shocks with Bottom-Out Control. These are an excellent choice for this machine with a solid feel throughout the full 18-inches of front and rear travel. We hammered it through some of the most serious whoops we’ve ever driven through and the action is as good as we’ve experienced. This is one of those machines that the harder you drive it, the more fun it is. That is more than enough reason to get this machine on our list of best UTVs.

CAN-AM MAVERICK SPORT 1000R

Can-Am has been working hard to impress the UTV world with some great new models. They turned the industry on its ear with the X3 lineup and the recent overhaul of the Maverick line with the Trail and the new Maverick Sport keeps things interesting for sure. The 100-horsepower Maverick Sport 1000R is about as much fun on the trails as you can have. It combines crisp power delivery with a comfortable cockpit and amazing suspension action into a machine that you’re going to want to have in your garage, if only long enough to gas up so you can go at it again.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

As you would expect from a Can-Am, the Sport is powered by a 976cc Rotax V-Twin engine. The 1000R produces an intense 100hp. It borrows from the X3 brother with large air intakes, oversized radiators and an oversized Donaldson airbox from the Maverick X3. It also gets a boost from a specialized high-performance exhaust line and muffler, an additional CVT intake and the same CVT driven pulley from the Maverick X3. It will get up and move with ease, pushing you back into your seat should you really stomp on it, and who wouldn’t want to do that?

The Maverick Sport uses double A-Arm front suspension and Torsional Trailing Arm (TTA) rear suspension. FOX 2.0 Podium shocks provide the shock duties with the front having 11.5-inches of travel and the rear shocks offering 12-inches of travel. Like we saw with last year’s Maverick Trail, the Sport geometry positions the shocks at the outermost corners of the machine. This design gives the chassis more stability and improves handling by reducing the load on the sway bars that are built into the front and rear systems. Add this to the longer 90.6-inch wheelbase of the Sport and you’ve got a great handling suspension system. One fact we really like about this machine is how well it tracks in rough terrain. While some machines in this class will start swapping at the rear end, the Sport doesn’t. It manages to stay straighter long and with less driver input, letting you focus on the trail ahead a little more. There is a lot less pucker-factor when getting on the gas in harsh terrain. Dual sway bars help a lot, too. Combine this excellent power output, with great handling and suspension, as well as the comfortable Ergo-Lok cockpit, and you’ll see why we added the Maverick Sport 1000R to this list.

POLARIS RANGER XP 1000 CREW

Polaris has been doing it right for a long time, and the newly redesigned Ranger XP 1000 Crew is no exception. Last year when they released the completely redesigned XP 1000 with over 100 consumer suggested improvements and refinements, we hoped they would pass those along to the Crew machine. They didn’t disappoint us. Polaris redesigned the Crew from the frame up to be the class-leading, six passenger utility/recreation machine.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

They started with a single-spar, one-piece mainframe that adds rigidity and capability to the machine. This bumped the towing capacity up to 2,500 pounds and overall payload capacity up to 1,750 pounds. You can tow more and carry more without overtaxing the machine. There is 11-inches of wheel travel at all four corners and 13-inches of ground clearance thanks to the revised suspension and the new 27-inch tires from Maxxis. They completely redesigned the looks of the machine to match the three-seat version, and most are either drawn to the sleeker appearance, or they hate it. We happen to like it. Polaris also redid the entire interior with thicker, plusher seating, a revised dash and driver-focused controls. There is an increase in interior storage and adding accessories is now easier than ever thanks to a redesigned electrical system that allows for essentially plug-and-play use. Installing a winch now takes 30 minutes as opposed to several hours.

The engine is a 999cc ProStar twin-cylinder, four-stroke that produces a rated 82 horsepower. Polaris took what was already the benchmark for a quiet running machine and made it smoother. You really notice it in the longer Crew version, too. This is a very capable machine for work and play, with strong trail manners and serious utility grunt for getting things done. It is a favorite of ours and an easy pick for this list.

CFMOTO ZFORCE 1000 EPS LX

Some people are shocked by the amount of nice things we have to say about the CFMOTO machines. They like to imply that it is driven by advertising dollars over credibility. We get it. There is always going to be that cloud hanging out there of questionable journalistic integrity. Let’s go ahead and clear the air right now – We would never allow advertising to dictate what we say about a machine or product. There are two factors that get the CFMOTO ZFORCE 1000 on this list, and two factors alone. It is a quality machine that we have enjoyed driving a lot, and it is a machine that is selling very well throughout Canada. We’re pretty confident that sales will increase in the U.S., too as the CFMOTO dealer base in that country grows.

TOP 5 UTVs FOR 2019

The CFMOTO ZFORCE 1000 EPS LX is powered by a 962.6cc V-twin, eight-valve, liquid-cooled, four-stroke motor with a 91x74mm bore and stroke and a 10.6:1 compression ratio. It has a a Bosch electronic fuel injection system and ignition. The CFMOTO motor is very torquey and fun to drive, producing 60.5 ft/lbs of torque at 6,200 rpm. It’s especially noticeable when you’re in some tighter terrain and you chop on the throttle. Horsepower is rated at 80hp. It’s not tops in the 60-inch class, but its close and it’s a fun machine to drive. We’re all about having fun.

Suspension wise, the CFMOTO has dual wishbone setups front and back with gas-charged shocks that have independent rebound and compression adjustments. The front has 283mm of travel and the rear has 280mm. It’s not the smoothest in the class, but it’s not the worst by a long shot. CFMOTO adds stainless steel bumpers and exhaust. CFMOTO adds mirrors, turn signals and a horn, as well as a 3,000-pound rated winch to the front of the ZFORCE. It is nice to see these accessories come as standard equipment, as they are things they often get added at additional cost at the dealership. Competitive pricing, strong sales and a commitment to the market, along with being a fun machine to drive, make this machine an easy pick for our list. Drive one yourself and you’ll see why.

KENNESAW, Ga. – June 6, 2018 – Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, is widening the world of pure sport performance by introducing the new 2019 Yamaha YXZ1000R Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicle. Designed for the ultimate high-performance off-road adventures on a wide variety of terrain – from open deserts and dunes, to muddy trails and rough, rocky terrain – the new YXZ1000R’s aggressive, race-ready chassis delivers coast-to-coast capability, comfort and confidence.

The new Proven Off-Road YXZ1000R and YXZ1000R Sport Shift (SS) is powered by Yamaha’s industry-first 998-cc triple-cylinder engine, and an enhanced five-speed manual transmission that delivers the industry’s only direct-connection experience for a wide range of drivers and landscapes across the country.

And for those who require even more punch, the Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing (GYTR) turbo kit designed specifically for the YXZ line is now easier, faster, and less expensive to install.
Also new for the 2019 model year, the YXZ1000R comes pre-wired for incorporating the all-new Yamaha Adventure Pro GPS powered by Magellan, providing off-road enthusiasts the confidence and capability to explore more, and share off-road adventures with friends and family.

“The YXZ1000R’s new design opens up the pure sport Side-by-Side package to a wide range of drivers and terrain, all backed by Yamaha’s industry-leading Proven Off-Road durability and reliability,” said Mike Martinez, Yamaha’s ATV / SxS group vice president. “The YXZ has appealed to real performance enthusiasts since Yamaha introduced the thrilling experience of pure-sport shifting to Side-by-Sides, and now Yamaha is opening the door to even more off-road adventure seekers with the new 2019 YXZ, Adventure Pro, and GYTR turbo kit.”

Capability: Proven Off-Road Performance in a Variety of Terrains and Conditions.

The new YXZ1000R brings the pure sport power and performance of its predecessors with the same industry-first three-cylinder, 12-valve, DOHC, liquid cooled, 998-cc engine. Delivering the most reliable and durable power of any 1,000-cc class machine, it boasts an aggressive 11.3:1 compression ratio and 10,500 RPM redline to facilitate the only true pure sport SxS experience in the industry.

That power is harnessed by the driver’s direct-connection to the vehicle through the industry-exclusive five-speed sequential shift transmission – now optimized with enhanced gear ratios paired with new 29-inch Maxxis®Bighorn eight-ply tires to provide Proven Off-Road performance in both high- and low-speed situations. Increased clutch durability delivers greater confidence during aggressive operation, while simultaneously improving performance at low speeds. The YXZ1000R is available in both a fully manual package, with a center-console sequential shift lever and foot clutch pedal, as well as Yamaha’s Sport Shift package, with pure sport-inspired paddle shifters synced to Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Shift (YCC-S) technology, an advanced automatic clutch system, eliminating the need for a clutch pedal.

Yamaha’s proven On-Command®system provides 2WD, 4WD and 4WD full diff-lock options in a driver-controlled system, eliminating any computer-generated hesitation or slipping, common in competitive models. Yamaha’s EPS with optimized steering ratios provides precise handling through the best balance of assist and positive feedback from any terrain.

Comfort: Enhanced Driver / Rider Experience with Cooler, Roomier Cabin.

The new YXZ1000R is redesigned to enhance driver and passenger comfort for a wide variety of terrain, both within the cabin, and throughout the ride. A new oversized radiator has been relocated behind the seats, eradicating excess cabin heat while simultaneously eliminating the risk of clogging while driving through mud. Multiple air vents allow for consistent air intake, even with a storage box or cargo in the bed.

The cabin space has also been enhanced for increased comfort with lower seats and an updated roof design, maximizing space within the cabin for both driver and passenger, while easing entry and exit from the vehicle. The new roof design, combined with the more aggressive body styling, creates greater visibility in a variety of environments.

Optimized suspension settings offer greater ground clearance and a smoother ride in more diverse environments. New FOX RC2 shocks with updated spring rates and new high flow internals developed exclusively with FOX Racing are now available with dual springs and adjustable crossovers. The advanced 26-inch shocks jut through the steeply-raked front hood to soak up 16.2 inches of travel in the front, while massive 32-inch piggybacks withstand up to 17 inches of travel in the rear.
